CES 2013: the iOS accessories that impressed us the most

As you all know, CES came to a close Friday afternoon at the Las Vegas Convention Center, but only after an exciting week of new product announcements and unveilings. Sebastien and I made the Vegas trek to see the action first hand and we scoured the floor looking for the hot new iOS compatible products that will be hitting it big in 2013. Step inside for a run down of what we really liked and what could be making a splash over the next 12 months...

AL13: a slim aluminium bumper for your iPhone

Here at iDB, most of us have adopted the "no-case" policy for our iPhones. Cases are typically bulky, ugly, and although they are made to protect our handsets, they cover up the beautiful design Apple has worked so hard to achieve.

But the folks at the design firm 'm' think they have a cure for the common case. Their new AL13 is an ultra-thin bumper for the iPhone 4/5 that protects the device with lightweight aerospace aluminum without altering its look...

CES 2013: Incipio announces NFC-enabled iPhone wallet

Like Griffin, Belkin and other iOS accessory powerhouses, Incipio turned up at CES this week to unveil a wide range of new products. Among them are a dual iPhone 5 car charger, and an iPhone case with a built-in tape measure.

Perhaps most interesting, though, is its new Cashwrap iPhone case. The thin case not only protects the handset from drops and other accidents, but it also gives it the ability to make NFC transactions using the Isis platform...

CES 2013: Canopy’s Sensus case adds touch controls to the back of your iPhone

As CES marches on, it's getting tougher and tougher to keep up with all of the different iOS accessory announcements. But we're trying. Earlier today we saw the Hapifork from Hapilabs, and Griffin's PowerDock, and now we've got an interesting case to show you.

The Sensus iPhone case, from Canopy, is very unique in that it has a 10-point touch sensor across the back, and built into the sides of it. This enables users to interact with applications and perform other tasks without actually touching the handset's display...

Belkin unveils the Thunderstorm, a handheld home theater for your iPad

CES starts today, meaning you can expect to see several new product and accessory announcements over the next 5 days. Earlier today we told you about the Cookoo smart watch, and now it's Belkin's time to shine.

Known for Apple accessories like USB cables and keyboard cases, Belkin doesn't have much of a track record in the audio space. That changes, though, with the Thunderstorm, a new iPad case with built-in speakers...

Twelve South announces new iPad mini BookBook case

The BookBook case line is perhaps one of the most popular on the market. Twelve South makes them for a number of Apple products including MacBooks, iPads and iPhones. And, as the name suggests, they all sport a similar leather-bound book design.

Last month, Twelve South updated its iPhone BookBook case to support the new iPhone 5. And this week, it's released a version of it for the iPad mini...

Making the case for going case-less

I decided to go completely case-less. Most of you guys probably think I already do that, since I never have a case on my devices when I'm filming a new video.

But that, as it turns out, hasn't been so. I used to only keep my iPhone nude for aesthetic purposes on film. As soon as I hit the shutter release on my camera to stop filming, back in the case she went.

Then I read something that changed my perspective on things. After seeing this post by John Gruber, I started thinking. Why are we so obsessed with encapsulating our devices in protective covering? Aren't we ridding ourselves of the pleasure of using it as it was intended and designed to be used?

I decided to embark on an experiment. One that could prove costly, but at the same time provide me with a since of liberation. I was going to go case-less...

This case turns your iPhone into a Swiss Army knife, literally

Smartphones are often referred to as Swiss Army knives. They're digital cameras, and movie players. And with their vast app selections, there's little else they can't do — much like the popular pocketable multi-tool.

But the new TaskOne case takes the term a little more literally. With its built-in 2.5" drop point blade, bottle opener, wire cutters and host of other tools, it actually does turn your iPhone into a Swiss Army knife...

This iPad case has 8 built-in speakers

There's a lot of things that the iPad excels at, like performance and screen quality. But it leaves a lot to be desired in the audio department. The tablet just doesn't have the technology to deliver rich, full sound.

Obviously, there's a number of accessories on the market today that fill this void, like the Jawbone Jambox. But none of them are as portable and attractive as the iPad itself. And that's where ORA comes in...

iPad mini mod unveils new aluminum Keyboard Case

Black Friday is this week, meaning that the holidays are once again almost upon us. And for those still trying to figure out what to get that special someone, the new iPad mini seems to be a popular choice.

But what do you do if that person already has the tablet? Fortunately, accessories for the device are finally starting to surface. In fact, the folks over at iPad mini mod just unveiled a new keyboard case...

Twelve South launches the BookBook for iPhone 5

Twelve South’s BookBook case for the iPhone with its built-in wallet, leather-wrapped frame and Harry Potter-like design stands out among an endless sea of sleeves and cases polluting the market on a daily basis, with just a handful focused on practicality.

Jeff reviewed the original BookBook for iPhone last year and came away impressed by the overall functionality and build quality. This summer, Twelve South re-released the popular iPhone case in Classic Black and refreshed the Vintage Brown version. And finally, now the company has updated the accessory for the iPhone 5 form factor...

Belkin unveils new keyboard case for iPad mini

The iPad mini, because of its size and lack of high-end features, has been informally dubbed a consumption device. It seems like more folks are using it more for web surfing and media than they are for getting work done.

But those of you who are using the mini for work purposes may be happy to hear that Belkin has just taken the wraps off its new Portable Keyboard Case. It's slim, lightweight, and has a removable Bluetooth keyboard...
