Google rebrands Currents as Google Play Newsstand, adds new features

The search monster Google on Tuesday refreshed its Currents for iOS application with a revamped design featuring all-new navigation, the ability to subscribe and get news from topics you're most interested in, as well as discover new articles and editions in one place, and more.

There's also the new My Library feature which collates all of your content subscriptions so they can be easily browsed and managed.

For those unfamiliar with Currents, it's basically Google's version of Apple's stock iOS Newsstand application. The iPhone and iPad is available free in the App Store.

Microsoft updates Bing Search app with translation widget in Safari and Notification Center

First demoed at WWDC 2014 back in June, Microsoft's Bing translation widget and custom actions for Safari and the Notification Center in iOS 8 is now available by way of an update to the free Bing Search app for the iPhone and iPod touch devices. Available free of charge in the App Store, the new Bing Search 5.0.1 also contains bug fixes.

As shown on the screenshots top of post, enabling the Bing Search Translation action in Safari requires that you bring up the Share sheet in Safari.

A first look at Minuum keyboard for iOS 8

On the iPhone 6 Plus, screen real estate is not as much of an issue as it is for the 5s and smaller. For those of you lucky enough to get your hands on the biggest iPhone ever, you might turn your nose up at anything that truncates an app’s features in order to save screen space. But, the rest of us need every inch we can get.

Minuum is a keboard app that can be set as the default thanks to iOS 8. It features an intelligent auto-correct that learns your typing habits, predictive typing for getting to the next word faster, and a keyboard that can be minimized into a single line on the screen.

Awesome Screenshot now available as Safari extension on iOS 8

As our own Jeff told you before, Awesome Screenshot, a desktop web app for Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari, is arguably the best way to capture an entire web page as an image on OS X.

Thanks to the various extensibility features introduced in iOS 8, this nifty little utility is now available as a screenshot extension for Safari on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices running iOS 8.

Upon downloading the free app from the App Store, Awesome Screenshot will allow you to capture a screenshot of any webpage simply by choosing it in Safari's Share menu.

Not only can you capture images of web pages on mobile devices with ease, but also annotate and share them with others using Apple's stock sharing choices or a number of third-party Share extensions available in the App Store.

Skype gains iOS 8’s interactive notifications

Now available in the App Store, Skype for iPhone 5.5 brings iOS 8 interactive notification support for audio and video calls and messages, in addition to general improvements, compatibility enhancements and bug fixes.

I took a road trip last weekend and wanted to be able to access plenty of podcasts to keep me occupied during my long drive time. I thought about how there are a number of great third-party podcast apps out there. So many, it is hard to choose which one is my favorite.

Almightree: The Last Dreamer is a 3-D platform puzzler with an adventurous theme

Fans of adventure games like Zelda and Oceanhorn will be happy to know that a new action adventure platform title has recently made its way into the App Store. It doesn’t have quite the same mechanics. In fact, it is a puzzle game more than anything. However, it will bring back memories of following a hero on an arduous adventure.

Almightree: The Last Dreamer is an adventure game that is part platformer and part puzzle. It appears there is a new genre in town and it is growing by the minute. Check out our game review of Almightree.

Photo apps optimized for iOS 8

Back in June, Apple announced PhotoKit, a new way to edit photos using third-party apps and filters – all from the stock Photos app. Many legacy photography apps have received updates enabling these features, making accessible a great deal of functionality, all in one app. iOS users can now apply watermarks, filters, effects, and more directly in Photos, a feature iPhoneographers are sure to love.

We've brought together a list of the photo apps that have been updated to support Apple's PhotoKit and can be downloaded now.

Apps of the week: keyboards, widgets, bundles, and more

Oh boy, oh boy. For me, the best part about a big update to Apple’s mobile operating system is the super cool updates and new apps that make use of new features. This weekend is going to be fun for me. If you are excited about the new features in iOS 8 that you’ll be able to take advantage of, or just want something fun to pass the time with, we’ve got a list of apps and games we think you’ll enjoy.

A first look at SwiftKey Keyboard for iOS 8

My brother is an Android user and I am an iOS 8 user. So of course he is always showing me things that he can customize on his smartphone that I can’t. One time, he showed me how he could swipe his finger across his keyboard to type words. “Big deal,” I said. “Jealous,” I thought.

Now that SwiftKey Keyboard is available as a default keyboard for iOS 8, I was quick to download it to see just how cool the feature really is. SwiftKey is mainly a predictive keyboard that learns your writing style and gives you suggestions for what you might want to say next. But, it also has that cool “Flow” swiping feature so you can type without tapping.

OmniFocus 2 for iPad now available with new iOS 8 features

OmniFocus is probably the most comprehensive getting things done (GTD) app available on the iPhone. It makes project management easy and convenient, helps keep you organized and on task, and makes it possible for you to schedule your busy life.

Finally, OmniFocus 2 is now available on the iPad as a new download. It has a completely redesigned user interface that takes advantage of the larger screen. It combines all of the best features of OmniFocus 2 for Mac and OmniFocus 2 for iPhone into one great app on the iPad.
