Google Maps for iOS saw 10 million downloads in first 2 days

It's been 5 days now since Google released its highly-anticipated Maps app for iOS, and it's still the #1 free download in the App Store. With its vector graphics and exclusive features like Street View, the app is obviously a hit.

But just how big of a hit are we talking? Well Google SVP of Commerce Jeff Huber gives us some insight on that via a post to his Google+ page. He says the Maps app saw more than 10 million downloads in the first 48 hours...

Smule’s Strum app adds music and Instagram-like effects to your videos

Even if you don't recognize the name Smule, chances are you've still heard of one of their apps. The Palo Alto-based mobile developer has delivered some pretty big iOS hits in its day such as Ocarina, which turns your phone into a flute-like instrument, Magic Piano, and I Am T-Pain.

This past week, Smule introduced its latest creation: an iPhone app called Strum. Unlike the aforementioned titles, Strum doesn't help you create music, but rather it allows you to create and edit short movie clips with Instagram-like video filters, digital audio filters, and more...

Google Maps app could violate European data protection law

I read an interesting article the other day by Evan Wiener on why Apple dropped Google from Maps in iOS 6. Wiener suggested that Google was withholding features, like voice-guided navigation, as a negotiation tactic to get Apple to agree with deeper Google integration, and Apple finally said enough's enough.

The well-connected John Gruber confirms that he's heard a similar story from numerous sources — more specifically, that Google was wanting to collect user data for serving up targeted ads, and Apple said no. And wouldn't you know it, it seems Google's trying to do the same thing in its new Maps app...

Dropbox 2.0 brings a revamped UI and new photo features

We've seen a number of significant app updates over the past few days. There's Flickr, which received new photo filters, 1Password, which got a total makeover. And this morning, Google+ received a nice little touch up.

This afternoon, we're adding Dropbox to the list. The popular cloud-based storage service updated its iOS client today with 'a shiny new design,' and a new Photos tab, which puts all of your photos at your finger tips...

Google admits Google Maps for iOS is better than Android version

As most of you have probably heard by now, the official Google Maps app finally hit iOS last night after several months of speculation. It's fast, looks great, and the general consensus seems to be that Google really hit a home run.

New York Times' columnist David Pogue certainly seems to like it, and he had a few interesting things to say about it in his review. The well-connected writer says that Google admits the iPhone app is even better than the Android version, and an iPad version is on the way...

Google Maps app now available in the App Store

As expected, the official Google Maps app has landed in the App Store this evening. The release comes following a number of rumors, which have been circulating since the summer when it was announced that Apple would be replacing Google Maps in iOS with its own in-house solution.

The app works on the iPhone and iPod touch (no iPad version yet), and includes a number of features such as voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, Google's exclusive Street View, which allows you to look at locations from street level, and public transit directions. More details after the fold...

Google to release iOS maps app tonight

After much wait, it seems that Google is finally set to release its iOS maps app tonight.

As you'll no doubt recall, Google Maps was the stock maps app on iOS on up until it was usurped by Apple's own flavor of maps beginning with iOS 6. Of course, that didn't go down so well for Apple, as its Maps app was critically panned for being ugly at best, and dangerously inaccurate at worst.

The Apple Maps debacle got so bad that a public apology was posted by Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Scott Forstall, the man behind Apple Maps, was relieved of his duties.

Now, after months of speculation and wait, AllThingsD is reporting that Google will release its iOS maps comeback tonight...

Nintendo’s Pokemon Company releases Pokedex app for iOS

Late last year, Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata went on record as saying the Japan-based video game company would not be porting any of its titles to the iOS platform, despite the fact that both users and investors were calling for it. He said doing so would mean "Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo."

Knowing this, it was interesting to see The Pokemon Company, a subsidiary of Nintendo setup to market and license the popular franchise, has just released an official app in Apple's App Store. It's called Pokedex for iOS, and it includes everything you'd want to know about your favorite Pokeman characters...

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City now available in the App Store

Here it is folks, the moment you've all been waiting for. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City iOS port is now available in the App Store. That means that the 1980's, and all of its big hair, oversized sunglasses and pastel suits, are now just a tap away.

Rockstar has been leading up to this moment for over a month now, announcing back in October that it would be releasing an iOS version of its popular PS2 GTA title. And from what we've seen, it looks and sounds every bit as good as the original...
