Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders is Apple’s new Free App of the Week

Boy, I've spent countless hours and had tons of fun playing the Sky Gamblers games by Atypical Games. It's one of those system sellers that every avid gamer should have on their device to show off to friends, it's that good.

In terms of graphics, these games literally have it all: lots of detail, interactive cockpits, special effects galore, specular masks, bump mapping, atmospheric scattering, volumetric clouds with realistic lighting and sun glare.

There are also beautiful day and night transitions, God rays, high definition textures, 4x anisotropic filtering, high dynamic range rendering, radial blur, heat haze, refractive raindrops and lots more. The care and thought that had gone into designing Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders, the most recent installment, has clearly caught Apple's attention.

Previously, the iPhone maker featured Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders as one of its 2013 Design Award winners and now the company has decided to feature the game as its Free App of the Week. Trust me, Storm Raiders is the ultimate World War II air combat game and you'd be foolish to pass on it..

Apple and Google push Nintendo and Sony into No. 3 spot in mobile gaming

We've seen how mobile killed traditional music, draining sales from retail CD stores. Console games appear headed for the same fate. Worldwide revenue for handheld console makers fell during the second quarter of this year, pushing companies like Nintendo and Sony into third place behind the first-place Apple App Store and No. 2 Android-based Google Play.

According to a joint report by research firm IDC and app analytics company App Annie, consumers spending on mobile games in the Google Play store rose during the quarter as Android games picked up 1.6 percent of the market between the first and second quarter of 2013. The Google Play store has taken steps to attract more gaming dollars by tailoring its service for developers...

Gameloft unleashes Asphalt 8

Is it the speed? The acceleration and pure velocity? Nah, it's got to be going Airborne, says the clever blurb for Gameloft's highly-anticipated eighth installment in the Asphalt mobile racing franchise. We previewed the game back in June and although it got delayed a bit as the team needed more time to perfect the little things, it's out now and available now for your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad for just 99 cents a pop. I've included action-packed screenies, additional info and a launch trailer so jump past the fold for more awesomeness...

M.A.C.E. brings a traditional vertical shoot ’em up to an iOS device near you

If you are a fan of the classic shoot ‘em up (shmup) arcade games of the mid 1980s, you’ll be happy to know that Entwickler-X has recently launced a game that looks a lot like Raiden, but takes place in outer space instead of earth.

New Real Racing 3 update brings classic American muscle cars

One of the key reasons I used to burn midnight oil quite a lot playing Driver on the original PlayStation - apart from the locations (Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York) and the awesome controls coupled to realistic physics - is the vehicle lineup, the sort of cars you see smashed in the 1960-1970s car chase and cop movies.

To fans of such legendary cars as the Dodge, Shelby and other big V8 muscle cars: Electronic Arts's latest content update to free-to-play Real Racing 3 is a no-brainer.

That's right, you can now own classic Detroit metal in this Real Racing 3 update, as well as race friends on a bunch of new tracks, appreciate physics enhancements, better camera angles and lots more...

EA and Mythic bringing cult classic ‘Dungeon Keeper’ to iOS this winter

EA has been very busy this week, announcing its new 'Heroes Of Dragon Age' RPG, and offering up details on FIFA 14. And it's not slowing down; today it announced it's teaming up with Mythic Entertainment on a new strategy title.

The game will be a reboot of the cult classic Dungeon Keeper, a popular strategy title from the late 1990's that involves building up a dungeon and protecting it from invaders. And it'll be landing on both iOS and Android this winter...

EA jumps on the RPG bandwagon: Heroes Of Dragon Age coming this Fall

Role-playing games are seemingly becoming all the rage on mobile. Following last December's release of BioWare's Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Guild Software’s MMORPG Vendetta Online launch earlier in the year, some of the biggest names in gaming have taken notice of the trend.

For example, Wizards of the Coast just announced the impending release of Arena Of War for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, their first D&D mobile game set in the fabled Forgotten Realms universe.

Not content with sitting on the sidelines and watching others monetize RPG fans, publisher Electronic Arts has tapped developer BioWare to deliver Heroes of Dragon Age, basically a combat-focused spinoff of the famous Dragon Age series...

Free-to-play Dungeons & Dragons: Arena Of War coming to iOS

Big news for avid fans of the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role playing game: developer DeNA Santiago has revealed the first teaser trailer for an upcoming mobile version of Dungeons & Dragons called Arena of War. Coming soon for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, it's the first Dungeons & Dragons game on mobile platforms, publisher Wizards of the Coast (of the Magic: The Gathering fame) said.

Combining 3D battle with collectible card gaming mechanics, Arena Of War takes place in the famous Forgotten Realms universe and includes some of the most iconic locations as seen in Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and The Icewind Dale...

EA Mobile and PopCap Games unleashed the long-anticipated Plants vs. Zombies 2 last Thursday and already the free-to-play game has amassed a respectable sixteen million downloads on the App Store, making it the most successful mobile game launch in EA’s history.

Matter of fact, the game has achieved one of the biggest opening weekends on the App Store ever for a mobile game title, EA boasted. If you're a fan of the franchise, you'll be delighted to learn that the first major content update is coming soon...

Popular ‘World of Goo’ game finally updated with iPhone 5 support

At the height of its popularity, World of Goo was one of the top games in the App Store. It's won multiple 'Game of the Year' awards, and has seen success across multiple platforms. But unfortunately, the iOS version has been neglected for the past year.

When Apple increased the screen size on its iPhone and iPod touch to 4 inches last fall, most devs updated their apps right away to support the new resolution. But 2D Boy, the developer of World of Goo, didn't and has ingnored the change up until—well, now...

Solar Flux HD takes you on a gravitational ride across the universe

Firebrand Games recently launched an iPad game that looks like it came straight from NASA’s image archives. If you’ve ever wondered what deep space might look like, now is your chance.

Solor Flux HD is a physics-based puzzle game that puts you in the seat of a plasma-gathering shuttle. Collect as much plasma as possible and spit it back at the sun to stop it from dying…
