Mobile Substrate updated with support for iOS 7 and ARM64

Great news for jailbroken folks on newer iPhones and iPads this morning. Saurik just announced that a new version of Mobile Substrate is out with support for iOS 7 and ARM64. The update will allow developers to update their jailbreak tweaks to work with the newer hardware and software.

This is a huge deal because up until now, those of us on devices like the iPhone 5s or the Retina iPad mini have been extremely limited as to what we could do after jailbreaking—I don't currently have a single tweak installed. But now that this new Substrate is out, that should begin to change...

Getting stuck with Evasi0n 7 at Configuring System 2/2? Try this

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I never got around to posting a Windows jailbreak video tutorial for Evasi0n 7. Usually, I'm on such a tutorial like white on rice, and I take pride in helping our faithful readers through the entire jailbreak process, regardless of their platform of choice. This time, however, things were a bit different.

Although we were able to post our Mac video tutorial in a short turnaround time, the Windows video tutorial was nowhere to be found. Why? Well, to be frank, it's because I couldn't get it working.

I could start the jailbreak perfectly fine, and I never ran into any error messages, but I just could not for the life of me get past the Configuring System 2/2 step during Evasi0n's jailbreak process. It's like everything would just come to a screeching halt as soon as it got to this step.

As you've probably figured out by now, I was finally able to work past this issue. The headline kind of gives it away, but the solution isn't something I can take credit for at all. The solution is actually thanks, at least in part, to someone very close to Saurik. Check inside for my explanation and video walkthrough showcasing how to jailbreak iOS 7 on Windows.

Evasi0n 7 1.0.2 released, fixes iPad 2 Wi-Fi boot loop issue

Evasi0n 7 1.0.2 has just been released for OS X and Windows with a fix for the Wi-Fi reboot loop that's plagued iPad 2 Wi-Fi users. The release, which is the third release of the jailbreak tool, is available for download right now.

Many iPad 2 Wi-Fi users have complained about the endless reboot loop at the Apple logo that results after using Evasi0n 7 to jailbreak their device. The problem gained notoriety on Twitter and on the JailbreakQA website.

Tweetbot 3 gains support for viewing images in Direct Messages

One of the most-loved Twitter clients for the iPhone and iPad, Tapbots' Tweetbot, has been updated with the ability to view images included in Direct Messages.

Available as a free update in the App Store, Tweetbot version 3.2.1 brings various bug fixes and the ability to view images attached to Direct Messages.

Twitter has enabled image attachments in Direct Messages two weeks ago and Tweetbot is among the first apps to support this neat little feature...

New tweak promises turn-by-turn navigation for unsupported countries

One of the downsides of Apple's Maps app is that it doesn't support turn-by-turn directions for all countries. A new jailbreak tweak is promising to fix the lack of turn-by-turn support within Apple maps, and it was just released on Cydia. Appropriately entitled MapsAllCountries, this new jailbreak tweak is available for iOS 6 and iOS 7 users who are jailbroken. Have a look past the break for more details.

How to supercharge Control Center with CCQuick

When Control Center was initially unveiled at the iOS 7 event, I quickly identified it as being one of the key areas that jailbreak developers would hone in on. It didn't take much rocket science to make such an obvious prediction, but I'm glad to see that I was right.

Speed up iOS 7 animations with NoSlowAnimations

One of the primary complaints that I hear about iOS 7, outside of the obvious beef with the app icons, is the slow animation speed. iOS 7 uses animations to add a sense of depth to the interface, and I'm a big fan of the effect. Unfortunately, the effect does add some perceptual slowness to the experience, whether the slowness actually exists or not.

Leaked documents show the NSA can gain nearly complete access to your iPhone

NYT Magazine design director joining Apple’s marketing team

Speaking with media outlet Mediabistro, longtime New York Times Magazine design director Arem Duplessis revealed that he is leaving the publication to take a position at Apple. He'll be joining the company's internal marketing team, though his specific role is unknown.

This is a significant hire for Apple, as Duplessis is a highly-regarded designer who is responsible for some of the most beautiful covers of the NYT Magazine in the last decade. And his department has won the ADC's 'Design Team of The Year' award the past 3 years in a row...

Archos previews array of iOS-compatible wearable gadgets and connected home gizmos

Ahead of the looming 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, the French consumer electronics company Archos is previewing an upcoming line of devices and accessories, including 'Connected Self' smartwatches and health trackers and various 'Connected Home' appliances, all designed to be compatible with Apple's iOS and Google's Android mobile operating systems.

There will also be a Connected Self mobile application to “serve as the backbone application for all connected self devices” allowing folks to track their activity, check their health-related data, turn on the lights, automatically capture video when motion sensors are triggered and lots more. Fitbit updated with MobileTrack feature via iPhone 5s’s M7 motion coprocessor

The list of apps enabled for Apple's power-efficient motion tracking chip, the M7, just keeps on growing. Fitbit, one of the finest fitness apps in the App Store, has been bumped up to version 2.1, now available in the App Store, and can now use the iPhone 5s's motion tracking chip to monitor your activity without draining your device's battery or having the app active for that matter.

Google updates Picasa, adds Google+ Auto Backup standalone Mac tool

Google has been offering its standalone Picasa Mac app for years and while it may lack ease of use and elegance of Apple's own iPhoto and Aperture software, by no means is it a slouch.

Matter of fact, I've been using the program for years as my primary point of entry for sorting, geotagging and organizing images in folders prior to importing them to Aperture for advanced touch ups and album management.

But aside from maintenance updates, Picasa for Mac spent much of 2013 unchanged in terms of features, so much so that I began to suspect that Google could perhaps discontinue it in order to make room for a standalone Google+ Photos app for the Mac.

Instead, yesterday's update has proven there's still life left in Picasa. In addition to a few new features and complementary fixes, the improved Picasa also brings out a brand new standalone tool allowing you to synchronize a batch of photos and videos residing on your Mac with Google+ Photos...
