Apple Orders 15 Million iPhone 5 Handsets For September Shipment

We're now well overdue for a new iPhone announcement, which means we're well into rumor territory, and the latest comes courtesy of long time rumor mongers and general guess-work merchants, DigiTimes.

The latest 'news' to come out of the site claims that Apple has placed an order for a massive 15 million iPhone 5 units from manufacturer, Pegatron.

Not only has Apple ordered the handsets, according to DigiTimes, but the site also claims they will be begin shipping the hardware this coming September...

Microsoft Kinect and iPad 2 Hacked Together in Holy Matrimony

Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect is currently the tech world's darling when it comes to hacking. The device's twin cameras and infra-red sensing abilities mean the Kinect is fully fitted for all kinds of hackery.

Apple's iPad is equally well-liked in the hacking community. A large screen, dual-core CPU, and huge install base make it a great tool for pushing boundaries.

With that in mind, you could be forgiven for thinking that if some clever people found a way to marry the two pieces of hardware together, we could be in for happenings of a cataclysmic nature - human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria! (Ghostbusters, for those wondering where that came from.)

Thankfully though, you'd be wrong...

iPhone 4 Prototype Hits eBay, Sets Our Hearts Aflutter [Updated]

Prototype Apple hardware has a habit of turning up on eBay, so we're not entirely surprised to see another of the company's finest show up for auction.

The latest prototype of Apple's to appear on the popular auction site is an iPhone 4 that, at least according to appearances, is a prototype of the handset we've all grown to love since its launch in June of last year...

Popular IM Client ‘Verbs’ Adds Push Notifications and More

The iPhone was once described by Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs, as a 'revolutionary Internet communicator' and we can't really argue with that. Since Apple unleashed the App Store onto the iPhone and iPod touch owning public, the role of a mobile communicator has changed considerably.

Previously, the best way to get in touch with someone whilst away from your desk was to call them. Thing is, if you're anything like me, you hate talking on the phone. That's where SMS comes in, but those 140 characters ain't cheap, especially if you happen to reside in the United States.

IM, or Instant Messaging, uses the power of the internet to kick those pesky SMS charges into touch and, at least until iMessage arrives, presents the best way to send messages between iPhones...

Apple Seeking Preliminary Injunction Over 4 Samsung Devices

Apple is ramping up its spat with Samsung, according to reports, with the company seeking a preliminary injunction on four of Samsung's top pieces of hardware. Three Android smartphones and one Android tablet are named by Apple as violating their patents, and the lawyers from Cupertino want all four devices yanked from store shelves.

The Infuse 4G, Galaxy S 4G, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Tab 10.1 are all named by Apple's crack legal team and if they get their wicked way, we could see four of Samsung's newest releases pulled from sale....

Apple to Ship 30m iPads, 17m Macs in 2011 Claims Analyst

Those analysts do just love to analyze, and once again we're faced with one such guesser expert and his estimates for Apple's iPad, iPhone and Mac sales as well as the big one - how much money will the boys in Cupertino rake in this year?

The analyst we're looking to this time is Needham and Company's Charlie Wolf, who believes both iPad and Mac sales will be higher than first anticipated, while iPhone sales will actually be lower than originally forecast...

iOS 5’s Hidden Twitter Functionality Hints at More to Come

Just before Apple's big iOS 5 reveal at WWDC a few weeks ago, rumors began circulating that Apple was planning to integrate Twitter right into the system. At the time we didn't know whether the rumors were true or not, let alone how deeply integrated it would eventually turn out to be.

When Steve Jobs and his band of merry men took to the stage at WWDC, we finally saw what Apple had in store for us, but despite iOS 5 largely hitting the spot we couldn't help but feel let down by the fabled Twitter integration, at least in its current form...

New Cydia Tweak Will Allow Tweeting From Anywhere Inside iOS 5

When Apple announced iOS 5 during its WWDC 2011 keynote three weeks ago, one of the standout features we were all drawn to was the twitter integration.

Promising to tie Twitter right into the operating system, iOS 5 has the potential to do some pretty cool things with one of the world's favorite social networks, but, at least in the first two beta releases, iOS 5 doesn't seem to make the most of the possibilities. Currently, the only real part of iOS to use Twitter is the Photos app, which allows the tweeting of images direct from the app.

It looks great, and works just as expected while also offering the ability to geotag tweets on the fly...

iOS 5-Like Incoming Call Notifications Coming to Cydia

The last three weeks have been largely spent by developers writing new widgets that work with Apple's new Notification Center, part of iOS 5. We've seen so many widgets come out of the jailbreak community in the last 21 days that we can't imagine Apple not giving normal App Store developers access to Notification Center's widgets, too.

A rare tweak to be shown off that doesn't involve iOS 5's Notification Center promises to bring iOS 5-like roll-down notifications to incoming calls, making them appear and work just like other notifications do...

40% of European Smartphone Buyers Hope an iPhone is in Their Future

A new study of European smartphone buyers by Yankee Group is due to be released next month, with the highlight being a claim that fully 40% of European smartphone purchasers intend their next handset to be an Apple iPhone.

After that massive 40% potential iPhone sales, Android comes in a distant second with 19%, followed by 17% aiming for a BlackBerry.

Former phone giant Nokia lags behind with a paltry 15%. The Finnish outfit will no doubt be hoping their imminent switch to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 will help arrest their alarming decline over the last few years...

The Infinite Loop iPhone & iPad Stand – Kickstarter Genius

Here at iDB, we love a good Kickstarter project. Created so independent designers and inventors can get the funding needed to progress, Kickstarter has been home to numerous much-loved tech in the past.

The latest iDevice to receive the Kickstarter treatment is a smartphone and tablet stand, dubbed "The Infinite Loop."

Yeah, we loved the Mothership reference in there too.....

iPhone 5 to Sport Dual-LED Camera Flashes?

What's that? You want more information on a possible iPhone 5 sporting dual-LED camera flashes? Well then my friend, you're in luck.

The latest rumor claims to come out of the notoriously 'not entirely accurate' tech site DigiTimes. It points to the next version of Apple's hugely successful smartphone packing not just one, but two LED flashes to aid in the taking of super-bright photographs....
