Google has finally unveiled its public service for mobile payments called Google Wallet. The NFC-based technology will initially work with select Android devices and participating merchants to give customers the ability to pay with their smartphones.

Short of a South Korean carrier offering an NFC-equipped iPhone case to customers, mobile payment technology has yet to make its name known on the iOS platform. Apple is expected to unveil an iPhone with an embedded NFC chip next year...

Netflix Becomes Streaming-Only Service, DVD Rentals Renamed to “Qwikster”

We don't usually cover non-Apple related news here on iDB, but this recent announcement from Netflix was too big to pass up. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has publicly apologized for the way that the company handled its recent pricing restructures for streaming/DVD rentals, and has announced a total division of Netflix's DVD and streaming divisions.

Many customers were outraged that Netflix essentially screwed subscribers of the DVD rental + streaming plan by raising prices, and Netflix has since rethought its approach to content distribution. The DVD rental service that made Netflix famous will be spinned off as "Qwikster," while Netflix will be used for online streaming only...

Certified iPhone NFC Case and Service Launched by South Korean Carrier

With circulating rumors that Apple will eventually introduce an iPhone with NFC technology, South Korean carrier KT Telecom is taking matters into its own hands. KT has launched the iCarte 420K NFC case for the iPhone 4.

Developed by Canadian company Wireless Dynamics, the $63 iCarte gives the iPhone Near Field Communications capabilities with the carrier's online payment service/digital wallet and South Korean credit card companies.

MyGreatFest starts tomorrow in London, UK at The Old Truman Brewery. Some of you have already told us that you will be attending, but if you're not going to be able to make it across the pond to attend in person, we've got good news: the convention will be streamed online for free!

Apple Wants to Let You Merge Your Apple IDs

Apple wants to let you merge multiple Apple IDs, according to an Apple executive relations employee. Users have voiced complaints about Apple's confusing policy relating to logins and accessing purchased content through multiple Apple IDs. A remedy for the situation is in the works.

Customers have emailed Apple CEO Tim Cook about the issue, and Apple has confirmed that customers will soon be able to consolidate multiple logins into one unified account.

Last night we told you about a report from The New York Times quoting multiple Apple employees that a "fairly different" iPhone 5 was only "just weeks away." The report didn't specifically mention the rumor of Apple announcing two new iPhone models at once, and now 9to5Mac is claiming that there are some interesting developments in the iPhone 5 department.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is indeed working on two iPhone models, but the iPhone 5 design has seen production delays. While a re-tooled iPhone 4 will be available this Fall, a completely redesigning iPhone 5 won't be seen until early 2012...
