Zoom will soon end support for iOS 11 and iOS 12

If you still rock an old iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to update to iOS 13 or higher (or buy new hardware) to continue using the Zoom app after an incoming update.

Zoom Support has acknowledged that the company will release an update to its videoconferencing app in March that will disabled support for Apple’s ancient iOS 11 software, released in 2017, and iOS 12, which was released in 2018.

“This is the last planned release to support iOS versions 11 and 12,” the company wrote. “With next month’s planned release, iOS users will need to upgrade to iOS 13 or higher to continue to receive additional Zoom app updates.”

If you currently use Zoom on an old iPhone or iPad that doesn’t meet the minimum hardware specifications for iOS 13, you’ll need to purchase new hardware to use Zoom or switch. Alternatively, switch to a newer device that supports Zoom.

Apple has a new developer API in iOS 17.4 that permits third-party video apps like Zoom to turn off hand-triggered augmented reality reactions by default.

This is in response to complaints from some people who would  accidentally trigger these augmented reality animations during inopportune times, like an important business call, and online therapy session, live newscasts, etc.

“Developers can control the default behavior of reactions,” Apple’s developer documentation explains. “This is controlled per application and user choice will override application declared defaults.” We have a tutorial explaining how to turn off these augmented reality reactions on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
