Apple has teamed up with the popular American singer and songwriter Billie Eilish on a new short film promoting the company’s new Apple Music spatial audio feature.

In the 90-second video posted to YouTube, Eilish promotes spatial audio on Apple Music, as well as her new album of course with a mashup of the songs “Getting Older” and “GOLDWING”.

Billie’s new album, “Happier Than Ever,” is available in spatial audio on Apple Music, and you’re invited to “immerse yourself in the hypnotic sounds of the sophomore album” from Eilish.

What’s so great about spatial audio on Apple Music?

Apple on July 19, 2021, announced the launch of the new spatial audio and lossless audio features for Apple Music subscribers, an endeavor that requires the company to work with artists and record labels to add depth to their original recordings. Because spatial audio requires multi-channel audio like Dolby Atmos, audio producers basically worked closely with Apple and Dolby on enriching the Apple Music catalog with spatial audio.

How to boost non-Dolby content with Apple’s new feature

It envelops the listener into a 360-degree faux surround soundscape, thanks to audio filters and effects. With special software, producers can extend existing two-channel stereo material with overhead audio and front separation between the vocals and instruments.

Many tracks on Apple Music sound better in spatial audio than in standard stereo. Some, however, may sound a bit subdued compared with source recodings. Apple has said that thousands of tracks on Apple Music were available in spatial audio on launch day, including Lady Gaga’s “Rain on Me” and Kanye West’s “Black Skinhead,” with more to come in the future.

Apple and Dolby are working with major record labels to have new music recorded in Dolby Atmos by default.
