iOS 8.0 general settings

So iOS 8.0.1 was filled with bugs that broke Touch ID and cellular data for many iOS users on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. But Don’t fret, if you’re in this precarious situation, we have an easy fix for you: Downgrade to iOS 8.0.

Well, actually, it’s sort of an upgrade in a weird and ironic way. Check inside for the full step-by-step tutorial. After you’re finished, your iPhone should work like normal.

Step 1: Download the iOS 8.0 firmware for your device via our download page.

Step 2: Turn off Find My iPhone on your device if you have it enabled. Go to Settings → iCloud, and disable the Find My iPhone switch.

Step 3: Connect your device to a Mac with iTunes installed.

Step 4: Open the device page on iTunes, and hold the Option key (Shift for Windows users) while clicking the Check For Update button. Find the IPSW firmware file that you downloaded in Step 1, select it, and click Open.

Step 5: A pop-up box will tell you that iTunes will update your iPhone to iOS 8.0 and will verify the update with Apple, click the Update button. Wait until your device updates, and enjoy your iOS 8.0 installation, with working Touch ID and cellular data!

The great thing about this method is that you don’t lose any of your phone’s settings or data. All of your pictures, messages, email, etc. should be ready and waiting on your when you downgrade.

Apple will probably issue an iOS 8.0.2 update in record time, but until then, this will likely be the best solution for those of you who need access to cellular data and Touch ID now.

    Will this work on Windows?

    • Yes

    • Yes you just need to press Shift instead of Option.

    • Yep use Shift instead of Alt/Option

      • Tristan DeFord

        Thank you! Much appreciated!

why not Restore ? and your device id with firmware is only Global ? so works for both gsm & gsm+cdma ? where’s the link for device model no. corresponding to firmware please ?

      • Restore purges all data from your device. Most people don’t want to do that. They just want to use their phones as they were an hour ago prior to updating.

      • Sandeep Roy

        OK – that’s one part – good – thanks

      • truth

I thought backups from later firmwares can’t be restored if u downgrade, but this is ok? Wut happens if u go bak to 7.1.2, does this stil work, and if it does is it not preferable?

      • Sandeep Roy

Applies only to iOS 8.0.1 – not to any other version. Read Again !

  • Fevostone

Just plug it into iTunes apple pulled iOS 8.0.1 anyway will just update to iOS 8

  • Sandeep Roy

JEFFFFFF – is downgrading to 7.1.2 still possible ?

    • Yes

    • solai

i think still  singing the IOS 7.1.2

You can follow the same Jeff procedure just use iOS 7.1.2

      • Kr00

Won’t work for iPhone 6 models. iOS 8 only for those.

      • Andrew

        Why? Can’t I downgrade my 6+ to iOS 6? They’re both six

    • Peanut Butter

  • Chris Castillo

Anyone knows if 7.1.2 is still being signed?

    • Yep

      • diggitydang

I got an error message on iTunes when I tried to restore, saying “The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible”. 🙁 I only wanted to test out iOS 8 and now I feel like a fool for giving up my JB… any ideas?

      • Drake

You’ve downloaded the wrong .ipsw, check your iPhone model number and compare it to the download file.

      • diggitydang

        Nope… that ain’t it… there’s only one option and I’ve tried out a few different versions (i.e. 7.1.2 and 7.1.1). I have a 5S. Ah well… iOS 8 has it’s advantages that I couldn’t even get with a jailbreak, so I’m not overly devastated…

  • Why turn off FindMyPhone? And, can we re-enable once back to 8.0?

    • It’s a security measure to prove you are the owner of the device. Yes you will be able to turn it back on afterwards.

      • Worked like a charm!

      • I thought that “check for update” doesn’t need you to turn off find my iphone, only “restore” does

  • Aaron de Silva

I’m not sure if it’s a big deal.. But shouldn’t your iPhone boot screen have a black background since its space grey and not the white background with the black Apple logo?

    • solai

No white Phone have white background with black logo

      • Aaron de Silva

Exactly what I said.. Check out the video above. The boot screen colour is the opposite.

      • solai

i mean only white phone have white background
Jeff is using space grey so space grey is only Black background with white logo.

      • XZavier

Solai thats what he said… “But shouldn’t your iPhone boot screen have a black background since its space grey”

    • lol your right it did switch from a black background to white not sure why.

Edit: It was after the phone was already on so it probably had something to do with the setup process.

  • Pascal

Thanks! My 6 Plus is working now

  • Chris Smith

Just a shame its going to take me 2d 10 hours to download iOS 8.0

    • eXoguti093

Why don’t you upgrade your wifi?

      • Chris Smith

i live in the middle of nowhere and this is as fast as i can get here

      • eXoguti093

    • Peanut Butter

      try this

  • Barry Wilson

Well done Jeff, getting this video out so fast…. Legend

  • LilaRose

Doesn’t work for me — says it can’t b/c the “firmware file is not compatible” no clue what that means.

    • Barry Wilson

Could be a GSM/CDMA thing, download the other one

      • LilaRose

There is only one for iphone 6

      • WonkieInc

Could be an iPhone 6/6 Plus thing.

    • leart

You downloaded the wrong ipsw for your device 🙂

      • LilaRose

I only see one listed for iphone 6….unless i’m not seeing it

      • leart

Mehh maybe you downloaded the 8.0.1 that is not signed anymore, not sure anyway

    • Peanut Butter

      try wwwdoticjdotme/ios/all

  • Ekitchi

If someone could upload the ipsw on Mega or something, since Apple’s servers are flooded by every i6/i6Plu user, that would be nice.

    • Peanut Butter

  • behnam

    F**k ios 8.0.1…it F**ked my iphone 6+ :/

  • ND Tou

Hey anyone else having springboard problems with orientation lock !! Also whatsapp notification cant swipe up to get rid of it.

  • Feiko Bulthuis

Try to synchronize again with the new software installed and turned off Find My IPhone for letting the service (cellular) work again.

  • Deemee

downloaded the software but it appears as a folder? surely I’m doing something wrong? when I click update I can see the folder but not the firmware which I need to update

    • Peanut Butter

change the .zip to ipsw in the name of the file

  • Alison Trifilo Eng

Thanks so much for this. It worked!! Yay

    • Deemee

where can I find the firmware file? all I can see is files in different folders :S

  • tim

    • WonkieInc

      Then go to iOS 7.1.2

  • mwpitt52

How come you guys are not reporting on the iPhone 6 plus bending story? I thought you were on top of all the stories Jeff? Ignoring this one on purpose?

  • Maximilian Malinowski

So I tried to downgrade! I did everything in the instructions and I got a message that said the firmware is not compatible! What do I do? I have a 5c and I downloaded the right firmware from the download page! Why won’t it let me put it on my phone?

    • Freddie Webster

You probably used the wrong ipsw what carrier do you have?

    • Peanut Butter

  • Butch Andre

O.K., you guys have come up with a swell fix for the dreaded 8.0.1 and instructed people to downgrade to 8.0. Now, get ready for more questions. I upgraded to iOS 8.0 and my Apple iPhone 4S has been jacked ever since. Thanks a heap!!!

Don’t know if its got anything in common, my iphone 4 iOS 6 doesn’t seem to find a carrier lol

  • diggitydang

I’ll give those a shot, thanks! BTW, you sound like my wife… hahaha… sorry, didn’t mean to come off so stubborn!

    • WonkieInc

Hahaha In the U.S., Sprint, Verizon and U.S. Cellular use CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM.

Most of the rest of the world though uses GSM, so it really depends where you are (And your carrier)

      • diggitydang

        Cool… Thanks!!

DO NOT UPDATE TO THE iOS 8.0.2! It will kill your Music. I have no problems with the iOS 8.0.1, but as soon as I upgraded my music became unplayable.

  • major beats

Can this work if an iPhone is stuck in recovery mode ? What would be the steps?

  • charlie glendinning

Once I downloaded it I went onto my iTunes (windows 7) and hit shift and check for updates but the file isn’t showing ?

  • Vishal Shamnani

How to restore with unsigned version of ipsw??
