How to block callers 1Do you remember that time you went out with your friends and you gave that guy/girl your phone number, but when you woke up the next day you realized that you weren’t as into that person as you were when you were looking at them through your beer goggles?

I’ll bet you wish you could block that person from calling or texting you. Especially if that person is kind of nuts and won’t leave you alone. Apple has finally given us a way to stop unwanted calls by making it possible to block callers in iOS 7 and we are going to show you how to enable it…

As a friendly reminder, we know that most of our regular readers are tech savvy enough to already have blocked their ex-friends in iOS 7. This tutorial is for those who are new to the iOS ecosystem. Remember, more than nine million new iPhones were sold over the first weekend of the new models’ launch. That means millions of potentially new readers to iDB. You wouldn’t want us to leave them out, now would you? If you already know this stuff, you don’t have to read this tutorial, nor do you have to feel compelled to comment on how you already know how to do it.

In iOS 7, Apple has made it possible for you to block unwanted phone calls, FaceTime calls, and messages. When enabled, you will not receive phone calls, text or messages, or FaceTime calls from the offending person. This is a great way to get rid of pushy telemarketers, finance companies that won’t get off your case, and creepy exes who still want to be your friend.

Do you have any unwanted callers that you’ve always wished you could block. How have you kept them from reaching you before iOS 7? Did you use a trick, like setting a special silent ringtone for them so you didn’t have to hear them calling you?

I have some questions: if I block someone and he or she calls me, what will they get? Busy? Or will it keep ringing with no response? If it is busy, will it take place immediately? Or after few seconds? The latter would indicate I declined the call. Is any of this carrier dependent? Or takes place entirely at device level?

    • Justice and Malice

Excellent question. I’m curious myself actually.

I’ve tested it and it just calls you and then goes to your voicemail, but you don’t get the call on your end.

      • Mohammed Sahib

And if I don’t have voicemail setup?

      • Joseph A. Ahmad

It’ll give you that generic message, “Sorry *insert your number* is unavailable” blah blah blah, something like that. I’m pretty sure, but that’s not something I’ve tested because I have my voicemail set up.

    • Sam

It will ring once then go to the voicemail.

      • Justice and Malice

So it just doesn’t ring your phone but allows the person to leave a voicemail? How is that blocking then? They can still bother you

      • Mohammed Sahib

And if I don’t have voicemail setup?

    • Bek Lane

we tried this today and they get a message saying your not available, however they are still able to leave a voice message which sucks, but it doesn’t come up as a missed call, but whats the point if they can still leave a bloody message :(

I can’t use iOS7 yet, will get my 5S in December.. Wondering if someone can tell me if you can block ALL blocked numbers (for example the same way as you block a known number since Blocked does show up in the history panel at the Call app)

    • http://www.sacramaniacs.com/ Lory Gil

You can block any number that you have. If you already know the number, enter it manually (read above). If you want to block someone who has called or texted you, block them from that particular call or text (read above).

  • Jo

Hahaha beer goggles never heard of that before

  • @dongiuj

That’s great, unless the caller witholds their number when calling. Then your phone has no idea who it is and the nightmare begins.

  • Tyler

dam I’m about to get blocked a lot

  • xSeriouSx

Lol, just as I anticipated, nothing compared to iBlackList. With iBlackList, I don’t ever have to hear from the blocked contact (not even by Voicemail) AND I can add ANY contact, whether or not they’re in my contact list or I’ve called them b4.

Nice try Apple, but you’re still far away from vibrating the foundation of this inequality:

iOS + Cydia >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Official iOS
