Android grabs 41 percent of tablet market as Apple’s share falls

Can the iPad mini save Apple’s slipping lead in tablet sales? The could be the question of the day as researchers announce Apple’s share of the tablet market dropped to 56.7 percent while Android tablets now account for 41 percent of the worldwide market.

According to Strategy Analytics, the iPad’s lead eroded from the 64.5 percent it held during the third quarter of 2011. Meanwhile, an army of Android tablets, helped by Apple losses, rose to 41.3 percent of the market, up from 29.2 percent during the same period last year…

Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston said:

No single Android vendor comes close to Apple in volume terms at the moment, but the collective weight of dozens of hardware partners, such as Asus, Samsung and Nook, is helping Google’s Android platform to register a growing presence in tablets.

Thursday, Apple announced it sold 14 million iPads during the fiscal fourth quarter of 2012.

Although the company said iPad sales were up 26 percent compared to a year ago, observers felt sales were softened by a number of factors, including consumers delaying purchases until Apple’s announcement this week.

Analysts revised their earnings estimates downward after Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook Monday announced 100 million iPads were sold as of two weeks ago. But some sleuthing revealed a slowdown compared to previous periods.

However, it appears there is a global slowdown in tablet demand. Worldwide tablet shipments rose by just 43 percent in the fiscal third quarter, down dramatically from the nitro-fueled 289 percent growth reported in the second quarter of 2011.

“This was the weakest growth rate since the modern tablet industry began in the second quarter of 2010″, writes Strategy Analytics.

So, can the less-expensive iPad mini reignite the demand for tablets – especially those made by Apple?

The new tablet is expected to begin shipping November 2. Apple began taking pre-orders today and two hours later sold out of white iPad mini stock.

Will this be enough time to boost Apple’s flagging market lead?

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu has described the iPad mini as a potential nightmare for Apple’s rivals, but can it counter Android’s momentum? The answer’s will likely have to wait until holiday shoppers vote with their wallets.

    Such nonsense. iPad up 26% but share fell?? Please. Android only releases devices shipped. Not sold. It’s not even close. When will people report the true numbers. Oh wait. You can’t. Other manufacturers won’t release actual sales figures.

      They report every entrant as market share lost – even if those devices aren’t being sold. That’s why Apple highlights web traffic usage which Apple maintains a 90% share. If iPads only made up 60% of the tablet market, it would be reflected in web browsing analytics. Unless people somehow believe Android users don’t browse the Internet on their devices. Considering the state of Android tablet apps, I’d wager that browsing is about all you can do on those devices(and customizing) lol.

        Exactly, Apple share is doping just because Andriod tables come free with every happy meal. What they do not report is how many of those cheap android tablets are been use as door stoppers, coasters or paperweight at the moment.

        Or you have to hate apple blindly not to see that Apple is better in the tablet market? I like to have the best tool for my needs. I have a PC as my primary computer, I have a ipad as my tablet. It has nothing to do with loyalty (for me at least) but the hard truth is that the ipad is better that other tablets.

      And 10 times the usage and the love from its users…why buy a tablet if you don’t enjoy it to become your main go to device..I bet the average android user bought a cheap crap that sucks to use, but they just use it to read free books, play free angry birds and do not really use it for anything else.the mentality of catering to the cheap and tech savvy is that your users already know what they want it for and what they will spend their money on…they aren’t willing to explore, use and discover new uses and worst of all pay for content.

    News flash, Windows has more market share than the Mac. Can you people please stop comparing an OPERATING SYSTEM vs a single piece of hardware? These articles are so misleading that it isn’t even funny anymore. It’s like saying that Chevrolet has more market share than the Toyota Tundra. Get my drift?

      Yes and No. The market share they are speaking of consist of 3 iOS devices, not only 1, you have more than one model to chose from.

      But I do agree that we are comparing one company with 3 product in the area versus multiple companies with a lot of models in the area (following the strategy if I shoot enough bullets one is bound to hit the target).

      But this only shows how great the ipad must be to stand the onslaught for so long

    I tell you what I have an iPad 2 and I like it but I was messing with that Asus Transformer….. Bad Ass!!!! However; iPhone and Macs are the best. I only say Apple is beat on tablets…. Now they wouldn’t be if they would let the ball hold off of iOS and lighten some restrictions. Because a Jailbroke iOS anything is better than anything the competition comes out with.

    I don’t think cook and company cares about market share, sur jobs gave a rat’s ass about it..the profits is where they want to rule..now keep in mind that like the iPhone, the ipad will go down in market share…after all is competing with tablets from 5 inches to 24 inches..with thousands of models, prices and confused people who want cheap devices…
