We’ve been hearing that Apple was going to be changing the iPhone’s dock connector since February of this year. Not only has the change been confirmed by a number of news outlets, but we’ve seen several leaked next-gen iPhone parts with the smaller charging port.

Along with its new smartphone, Apple is also expected to be using the new port in its iPad mini, which is rumored to debut this fall. But apparently it’s not stopping there. iMore has learned that Apple is rolling out the smaller dock connector across its entire iOS line…

Rene Ritchie of iMore reports:

“iMore has learned that Apple intends to update their entire lineup of iOS device products to support the new miniaturized Dock connector, and to do it as early the rumored September 12 special event this fall. This would include the new iPhone 5, the new iPod nano and iPod touch, the rumored 7-inch iPad mini, and an updated version of the current 9.7-inch iPad…

…Apparently, Apple believes consistent Dock connectors across the line, and other improvements they’re able to make to the new iPad this point, are more important than sticking to yearly release schedules, with a 16 month gap between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, and no substantive iPod touch updates for 23 months and counting.”

So maybe the reports that have been calling for a retooled third-generation iPad this fall might not be so crazy after all. We’ve been hearing whispers that Apple was looking to slim down the tablet, and fix the heat problem, so it would only make sense to add the new dock connector as well.

But other than that, there’s nothing too surprising about iMore’s report. Of course Apple would want to use the smaller dock connector in the new iPod touch and nano models, why wouldn’t it?

Rene Ritchie’s sources have been top-notch over the last 6 months, correctly giving him the iPad event date, as well as the September 12 iPhone event date, which has since been confirmed by several publications.

It looks like all of our iOS accessories are about to become obsolete. But hey, at least Apple will be providing us with an adapter.

  • Okay, if Apple wants to do this ALL at once, I say, ABSOLUTELY go for it. But slowly changing the connector on different devices across a calendar year, forget it. I have felt very strongly about the changed connector because it will take so long to get all of the devices on the same port. Doing it ALL at once makes the best sense.

I won’t even be that mad at having bought an iPad 3 earlier this year. Just make the switch and make it fast. That way if you buy a new speaker dock and you’ve got all new devices, they ALL work on your new hardware.

Please Apple. Please, I’m begging you. Do it all at once.

    Thanks Cody, great article.

  • So basically a big “F you” to anyone who’s already bought a new iPad. Great.

    • AforAppleAforAndoid

      such an ass

      • I’m sorry, but dropping $600 on anything, you expect more than 6 months out of it before it’s upgraded. That’s EXACTLY what this is, a giant middle finger to every single person who spent one freaking penny on a new iPad.

      • How does a new connector affect your “new” iPad? Does the new connector prevent you from charging your iPad? Does it prevent you from syncing your iPad? Does it prevent you from browsing the web? Does it self-destruct after the new iDevice comes out?

      • Clearly you didn’t read how they’re re-releasing it *Rumor mill, obviously*. Also, it means from this point on, third-party manufacturers are going to making the new dock pin size, not the old one. So yeah, it actually does effect me being able to charge it or connect it to some devices.

      • Impeach Obama

does it prevent you from buying a new designed dock station? yes it does

saying anything negative about Apple will cause immediate butt hurt to some and will result into massive down voting. πŸ˜‰

      • Down voting doesn’t bother me as much as how the responses give no real reason as to why they’re pissed. Can’t even make a statement in argument? Just means they know I’m right πŸ™‚ Haha

      • Completely agree. If people are going to rage vote, at least explain why you disagree.

    • You can buy an adaptor for the 30 pin connector to 19 pin.

      • Cause that’s not going to look odd at all…Part of Apple’s appeal is the look of their products, and an adapter like that would ruin that look instantly.

  • It word be nice if they just used micro USB

    • The Dock connector is very valueable. Have you ever heard a commercial where they say “Works with Samsung Phones”? No you didnt.. But all commercials Talk about the iPhone Dock and everytime they do more People hear about the iPhone πŸ˜‰

      • So valuable that they are going to change it. Years ago, the majority of cell phone manufacturers got together to come up with a USB standard port so chargers would be universal minus Apple of course.

There is no reason why a standard USB cable won’t work for Apple. It would be far more valuable to consumers to have one standard instead of 2 from Apple and one from everyone else.

      • Impeach Obama

and if you care about the planet then you will agree that people will be tossing less chargers in the garbage as they switch phones.

      • I don’t toss any chargers in the garbage. I have a few chargers where I can charge any device with a USB cable. No matter if Micro USB, Mini USB or Dock Connector πŸ™‚ My girlfriend has a Samsung and she charges with the same charger I do.

      • Micro USB can’t charge, play music and share your screen at the same time πŸ˜‰
The Dock Connector is huge and not perfect but to say you can replace it with a normal micro USB is wrong.

      • How often do you share your screen over USB? I would say the majority of people are mainly concerned with charging, playing music and connecting to their computer to transfer files.

One standard that is completely cross platform would greatly benefit consumers.

  • I am aware that these are rumors but still you write as if this small connector ist confirmed. Keep on writing about rumors but please dont write like they are facts. I dont think all these leaked things look very legit

    • 1337lolzorz

Have you not kept up with part leaks in the past? I guarantee you the next iPhone will have a smaller dock connector. Many reputable sources point this out.

  • Joey_Mousepad

Am I the only one that thinks this picture looks like something made of Styrofoam?

    • it looks so fake lol

    • Dunno.. I feel like some rumors like the dock connector or the two color design that popped up earlier this year just got fake selfmade prototypes and now everybody thinks that these parts confirm those rumors… Maybe I’m wrong… maybe not… nobody knows until Apple shows us^^

  • alexanderlyd

personally i think they will move to thunderbolt. a thunder bolt to thunderbolt cable and maybe a usb to thunderbolt cable for pc users. they obiously are very enthusiastic about thunderbolt and all macs have it now, its a great technolgy and blazing fast, it will be a good move.
