Netflix becomes top-grossing iOS app following offline playback introduction

After gaining the long overdue offline playback feature last week, Netflix's mobile app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has emerged as the top iOS app on the App Store's Top Grossing charts for the first time ever, overtaking apps like Spotify and Candy Crush Saga, according to stats from app tracking firm SensorTower. By comparison, just last month Netflix was the #7 top-grossing iPhone and iPad software overall in the United States.

At the time of this writing, Netflix's iPhone and iPad app was the top-grossing item on App Stores in the United States, India, Mexico and Colombia.

Apple airs new ‘Romeo and Juliet’ ad showcasing the iPhone 7’s camera

Apple on Monday night posted a new iPhone 7 commercial it's calling 'Romeo and Juliet.' The ad, which aired during Monday Night Football, highlights the video recording capabilities of the company's latest handset.

The spot opens with two children acting out a scene from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It looks very movie-esque, until the camera zooms out and you see a father sitting in the audience, recording the play on his iPhone.

iOS 10.1.1 bug allows researchers to bypass Activation Lock protection on iPhone and iPad

Back in November, India-based security researcher Hemanth Joseph discovered a bug in iOS 10.1 which permitted him to bypass Apple's anti-theft Activation Lock feature by entering an excessively long string of characters in the Wi-Fi setup text fields.

Apple has patched the flaw in iOS 10.1.1 but now, as noted by SecurityWeek, researchers at Vulnerability Lab have managed to find another method of bypassing Activation Lock protection on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 10.1.1 and they posted video evidence to prove it.

DirecTV NOW launches on iPhone, iPad & Apple TV

Two days ago, U.S. wireless carrier unveiled DirecTV NOW, its brand new Internet television streaming service that comes with a free fourth-generation Apple TV for those who would commit to at least three months of paid service.

Today, DirectTV apps for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV have gone live in the App Store.

Netflix launches offline viewing in mobile app

Following reports back in the summer that offline viewing would be coming to Netflix “by the end of the year,” the company said that it's starting to roll the feature to users around the world beginning today. A new Download button appears in the mobile Netflix app on select shows that can be watched without an Internet connection, including popular shows like “Narcos,” “Orange is the New Black,” “Stranger Things” and “The Crown”. Offline support for more shows will be added over time, said the firm.

Longstanding bug causes iOS devices to crash after playing a maliciously crafted video

YouTuber EverythingApplePro has has been sharing a bug in iOS which causes any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to glitch out after playing a malicious video link in Safari. The device will first slow to a crawl before freezing or crashing altogether, requiring a hard reset. This appears to be a longstanding bug because iPhones and other iOS devices running iOS 5 were found to be affected by the glitch.

As noted on Reddit, the top level domains that are currently hosting the glitchy video are vk.com and testtrial.site90.net.

New Lock screen bug bypasses iPhone/iPad passcode, lets you see photos/contacts

Apple likes to pride itself with strong security in iOS, but for all the platitudes the fact remains that the iPhone's Lock screen is one of iOS's weakest links. And now, YouTuber iDeviceHelp has discovered a new Lock screen vulnerability that lets anyone in possession of your iPhone bypass the passcode and get to your contacts and photos. The bug has been reported to Apple and should be fixed in a future update.

Apple yesterday announced a $300 coffee table photo book, titled “Designed by Apple in California”, which chronicles 20 years of iconic product designs. Jony Ive, Apple's Chief Design Officer, discussed the photo book with Wallpaper.com and Japanese design firm Casa Brutus.
