Apple updates iWork with Yosemite support, OS X apps get redesigned

Continuing with its marathon software rollout, Apple has posted updates for its iWork apps on both iOS and Mac. The suite of productivity software now properly supports the just-released OS X Yosemite, along with its major new features like iCloud Drive and Continuity.

Both versions received various improvements, such as customizable alignments and easier file sharing, but the three Mac apps got a lot more love then their iOS counterparts. Pages, Numbers and Keynote for OS X have been redesigned to better match the new Yosemite.

Apple releases iTunes 12.0.1 for OS X Yosemite

Following the release of OS X Yosemite this afternoon, Apple quickly pushed out iTunes 12.0.1. As you know, Yosemite includes a refreshed edition of iTunes marked as version 12, and this is an update for the folks who are using the new software.

Not much is mentioned in the change log in terms of what's new in 12.0.1, but it does note that at least one of the changes has to do with security. And given its release time, and .1 build number, we imagine that it includes other bug fixes as well.

Facebook app updated with support for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Facebook pushed out an update for its iOS client this afternoon, bringing the app to version 16.0. The social network doesn't say what changes were made, but it does now say "optimized for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus" in the description.

This is great news for folks with one of Apple's newer handsets, as their larger displays really highlight non-updated apps with stretched UI and fuzzy graphics. Facebook was one of the few remaining high profile apps without iPhone 6 support.

Autodesk revamps SketchBook app with new UI, tools and more

In celebration of its 5 year anniversary (seems to be the theme today), Autodesk has released an all-new version of its popular SketchBook app for iOS. It's universal, so it works with both iPhones and iPads, and it's free, with a single Pro Tools in-app purchase available for $3.99.

The icon is new, and upon launching the app, SketchBook veterans will notice that the inside is as well. There are a number of changes here, from the tools menu that's been relocated to the top of the screen, to the improved paint engine, and it all looks great on the new iPhone 6.

Zynga releases ‘New Words With Friends’ with new design and features

Celebrating its 5-year anniversary, Zynga has released a revamped version of its hit word game called 'New Words With Friends.' It's an all-new app, but users won't be forced to upgrade, and those who do will not see any kind of interruption in their gameplay.

The game is essentially a sleeker, more robust version of the massive hit that first debuted in 2009. There are some definite design changes here, with flatter UI elements and more streamlined menus, and a host of new features including a new offline solo mode.

Hulu Plus app updated with new design, in-app subscriptions and more

Hulu has posted a major update for its Hulu Plus iOS client, bringing the app to version 4.0. The update features a number of enhancements, including an all new design, new navigation options, and in-app subscriptions, which allows you to subscribe to the Hulu Plus service.

In addition to these changes, the Hulu Plus app also received a new Search function, which now offers contextually grouped results to help you find what you're looking for. The app has also been updated to support iOS 8, and to "run beautifully" on the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Halfbrick Studios launches completely redesigned Fruit Ninja game

Halfbrick Studios has released today what it is calling the "biggest update ever" to Fruit Ninja. The popular game, which has garnered nearly 700k reviews on the App Store, has been redesigned from the ground up with new content, gameplay elements and more.

At its core, most of the mechanics are still the same—the game is still about slicing fruit as quickly and efficiently as possible. But there are a lot of additions, such as new experience and currency systems, which are used to buy various upgrades and power ups.

Modern Combat 5 updated with support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Modern Combat 5, meet iPhone 6. Gameloft has just posted an update for the latest edition of its popular first-person shooter franchise, Modern Combat, with support for the larger displays found in Apple's new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch handsets.

Even casual gamers will immediately notice the difference after updating. Since Modern Combat 5 now supports the higher resolutions of the larger displays, it no longer has to upscale images, meaning graphics appear much cleaner and sharper.

Pebble smartwatches get new fitness features, cheaper prices

Pebble today announced that it is releasing an update for all of its Pebble and Pebble Steel smartwatches to add new features. The two devices are now capable of tracking a wearer's footsteps and sleep activity in the background, fulfilling a long time request by users.

Pebble says that these new capabilities won't have a major impact on battery life, and added that it is extending its fitness partnerships with new apps from Jawbone and Swim.com. The team is also opening up its activity tracking features to other 3rd party developers.

Apple issues update to patch ‘Shellshock’ Bash bug in OS X

Apple on Monday delivered the promised update to patch the 'Shellshock' Bash bug in OS X. You can download the update manually here, otherwise it should be popping up in the Updates tab of the Mac App Store shortly.

The security flaw was uncovered by security researchers last week and sent much of the Internet into a panic. Affecting the bash command shell in UNIX, the exploit allows for hackers to remotely execute malicious code.

MLB live streaming every World Series game, select postseason games via At Bat app

Baseball fans rejoice, the MLB.com At Bat app has just been updated with some great new features in time for October. For the first time, the League will be live streaming every World Series game and select postseason games to mobile devices.

Obviously, you'll need to be an MLB.TV Premium subscriber to access the new content, but it'll cost you $3.99 to get in for the rest of the season. And if you want to watch Major League Baseball on your iPhone or iPad, there's no better way to do it.

Apple no longer signing iOS 7.1.2, closing the downgrade window

Apple has finally ceased signing iOS 7.1.2 today, notes hacker iH8sn0w, more than a week after releasing iOS 8 . This means that you can no longer downgrade to the older firmware from iOS 8.x, or upgrade to it from older versions.

This is a big deal for jailbreakers, as 7.1.2 is the latest firmware that can be jailbroken, and there won't be one on iOS 8 for the foreseeable future. But it also affects average users too, as those not happy with iOS 8 can no longer revert.
