Apple to Fix Major iPhone Security Hole with iOS 4.2

Yesterday we reported that a major security flaw had been found in iOS 4, which would allow anyone to bypass the iPhone password protection with a couple simple actions. In my article I reported that Apple would most likely fix that with the future release of iOS 4.2, sometimes in the next few weeks.

It seems that I was right as an Apple spokeswoman gave Wired the following statement:

Major Security Hole Found in iPhone iOS 4

A pretty major security hole has been found in iOS 4 for iPhone. This flaw lets you access the contacts of a password protected iPhone. No hack or technical skills needed.

On a password protected iPhone, tap the "Emergency Call" button then enter ###. Tap the Call button and immediately hit the Lock button. It will open your iPhone Contacts app from which you'll be able to browse, edit, email, any contact.

Will You Upgrade Your iPhone to iOS 4.1?

This week Apple will release the iOS version 4.1 for the iPhone. If our calculations are correct the newest version of the mobile operating system will be hitting iTunes on Wednesday, September 8th.

The last couple of updates from Apple haven't been anything to write home about. Version 4.0.1 simply addressed the algorithm while the antenna issue was flooding the news wire. After that, version 4.0.2 basically just patched up a security issue that Apple left exposed. As far as actual tangible features both refreshes were pretty dull at best...
