Pacific Rim breaks into the App Store

I've been on the edge of my seat ever since the first Pacific Rim trailer hit theaters. For those not in the know, Pacific Rim is an upcoming sci-fi monster flick directed and co-written by Guillermo del Toro. There's something inherently appealing about the movie's premise: colossal monsters suddenly emerge from a portal on the ocean floor, crushing skyscrapers, obliterating entire cities and threatening the mankind's very existence.

Since it's 2020s, we were able to engineer gigantic humanoid mechas controlled by two pilots whose minds are joined by a neural bridge. The movie premiers tomorrow and Reliance Games has just released the official tie-in game for the iPhone and iPad. We have a trailer and a few additional details right below the fold...

Algoriddim previews djay 2, coming soon to iPhone and iPad

There's no shortage of apps for DJs on the App Store. For instance, one of the ten apps and games Apple made free as part of its 5 Years of the App Store promo is Traktor DJ (normally a $20 value), an excellent piece of software that appeals to pro DJs. Even the famous iOS hacker pod2g, known for his jailbreak releases, took notice of the trend and created his own app that will make you the star of every party, podDJ.

In my view, Algoriddim's djay for iPhone and iPad is arguably the best-known and certainly one of the first DJ apps to grace the App Store. Two and a half years following its App Store debut, the successor to djay is coming soon to an iPhone and iPad near you, Algoriddim confirmed Thursday. IFTTT brings its powerful automation service to the iPhone

IFTTT has been around for a while now—since 2010. The acronym stands for 'If This Then That,' which does a great job of summarizing what it does: allows users to create automation Recipes for various services using a Trigger (this) and an Action (that).

Services like Instagram and Dropbox are known as 'Channels,' and there are different Triggers and Actions associated with each. It's a cool idea, but the only way to set up these Recipes through IFTTT was via a web browser. That, however, changes today...

Plants vs. Zombies 2 lands in Australia and New Zealand App Stores

Good news this afternoon for those looking forward to the highly anticipated Plants vs. Zombie sequel. Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time has started hitting App Stores around the world, despite EA's warning that the game wouldn't make its July 18th deadline.

Don't get too excited though. Apparently, today's release is just a limited soft launch to help the developers fine-tune the game's new free-to-play experience. For now, only folks in Australia and New Zealand (or with iTunes accounts in either country) can download it...

Deus Ex: The Fall coming to iOS this Thursday

Deus Ex fans will be happy to hear that Square Enix and its development subsidiary Eidos Montreal have just announced that the latest iteration of the popular franchise, 'Deus Ex: The Fall,' will be arriving in the App Store this Thursday, July 11.

The game will launch exclusively on the iPhone and iPad, and its story line will take place after 'Deux Ex: The Icarus Effect' novel, which acted as a prequel to the nanopunk/cyberpunk franchise. And yes, we have a gameplay trailer after the fold...

Kim Dotcom’s Mega iOS app in the works

If anything, the controversial Megaupload file-sharing service got the Internet mogul Kim Dotcom filthy rich. The German-Finnish entrepreneur is currently residing in New Zealand, where he manages a new cloud-based storage service startup called Mega that promises to protect your privacy from the government's prying eyes.

To help with that, the company acquired an Android app that's now being maintained by Mega contractors. Editions for Apple's iOS and Microsoft's Windows Phone being worked on, which is good news if you were looking to bolster up security of your personal cloud files in light of the ongoing scandal involving NSA spying and the PRISM intelligence program...

Ubisoft sets Prince of Persia release date: July 25

Montreuil, France-headquartered games publisher Ubisoft in mid-April confirmed plans to bring its award-winning Prince of Persia game to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. A pick up and play adaptation of the 1993 Prince of Persia classic, Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame puts you in the shoes of the Prince character who must save his Princess and kingdom “on a journey that will pave the path to his origins.”

Ubisoft yesterday confirmed in the first development diary video on YouTube that Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame is headed to iOS and Android on July 25. I've included that clip and additional tidbits after the break...

Indie puzzle-platformer Limbo makes a leap to the iPhone

Copenhagen, Denmark-based game developer Playdead has been enjoying huge successes selling three million copies of its puzzle action adventure game Limbo on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Steam, Playstation Vita, as well as Windows and Mac PCs.

USA Network iOS app released, lets you watch TV shows the day after they air

Following a long period of initial hesitance, major US television networks and content providers have finally relented and are now falling over each other to release software that lets Apple device owners stream television shows, with or without cable subscription.
