New Apple ads continue positioning iPad Pro as being better than a computer

Apple today published four new ads on its YouTube channel that continue to position its iPad Pro tablet as being better than a computer. The four new commercials, running sixteen seconds each, use the tagline “Real Problems… Answered” and appear to be based on typical PC user tweets.

The videos promote the tablet as a device that’s free of wires, immune to viruses, faster than most laptops and able to run Microsoft Office apps and connect to fast LTE cellular networks.

Skype group video calling starts rolling out with support for up to 25 participants

As promised, Microsoft has begun rolling out free group video calling in Skype’s mobile apps for iOS and Android devices, Engadget reported this morning.

According to Microsoft, this feature will allow Skype users to video chat with up to 24 other people at once in crisp 1080p resolution, and each participant can flip between the front and back camera mid-call.

Group video calling in mobile Skype apps is going to be available to users in North America and Western Europe. “We plan to be fully available worldwide in March,” said Skype.

Free group video calling is coming to Skype’s iPhone and iPad application

Skype is celebrating its tenth anniversary so the Microsoft-owned company yesterday announced that users of its mobile application will soon be able to take advantage of a free group video calling feature.

According to Gurdeep Pall, Skype CVP, group video calling on mobile devices will be coming to Skype’s iPhone and iPad app “soon,” and to Windows 10 and Android devices.

Microsoft doubles down on iPad bashing with a pair of new Surface ads

In what’s now become a recurring theme, Windows maker Microsoft just fired the latest salvo of television commercials that predictably portray Apple’s iPad as a lesser tablet. Posted on the official Surface blog, a pair of holiday-themed advertisements highlight one hardware and one software feature of the Microsoft tablet: a built-in kickstand and multi-account support.

The Redmond giant doesn’t shy away from mentioning the iPad brand name in the videos. “Free apps on the iPad don’t offer the same hands-free technology,” says the voiceover in the first ad that highlights a Food & Drink app which come preloaded with Windows 8.1. The other ad lambasts Apple’s device because it “doesn’t allow for multiple accounts and does not have the ability to monitor usage”…

New Nokia Lumia 2520 ad lambasts iPad for lack of keyboard

Microsoft has built up quite the library of iPad-bashing TV spots. And now that it’s buying out Nokia’s mobile hardware business, it’s getting them in on the gag. Today, Nokia launched a new TV commercial taking potshots at Apple’s popular tablet.

The ad is supposed to be about Nokia’s new Lumia 2520 slate, which launched last week, but you only see it for about 5 seconds at the very end of the 1 minute and 18 second-long video. For the other 72 seconds, it shows a user defending his iPad…

Microsoft now takes swipes at iPad mini

Wow, there’s just no stopping Microsoft’s marketing people in their anti-iPad crusade. As it’s done several times this summer, the Windows giant yesterday posted a Surface commercial which predictably takes swipes at Apple’s full-size iPad, criticizing its $499 asking price, lack of SD card slot and limited Office compatibility (go figure).

You’d have think Microsoft’s ad agency would not release another iPad bashing commercial until next week. Much to our surprise, however, a mere 24 hours later a new commercial has surfaced on YouTube, this time on Microsoft’s WindowsVideos channel.

And for the first time, the software giant is targeting the iPad mini by pitting Acer’s 8.1-inch Iconia W3 tablet against Apple’s popular 7.9-inch $329 device. I’ve included the ad for your viewing pleasure right after the break…

Microsoft just doesn’t skip a beat when it comes to its fantasy that the Surface rivals Apple’s iPad. Never mind the software giant had to reduce prices on its tablet because no one is buying the device. Never mind Thursday the company took a $900M writedown on those cheaper Surfaces that no one wants.

To mark all the features the Surface has (which no one except paid actors apparently want), the Redmond-based Windows giant has released another sneering ad pitting its tablet against Apple’s. iPad-bashing is becoming the recurring theme for Microsoft as the once dominant force in computing struggles to reclaim its relevancy in the post-PC world. Nowhere is this more evident that in Microsoft’s inability to hit the ground running with Windows 8 on tablets.

With a few notable exceptions, you can tell an also-ran has run out of ideas when it puts together a television commercial advertising its contender against the industry leader.

Sometimes the strategy of piggy-backing on the top dog’s popularity can do wonders (case in point: Samsung), but often times it just backfires.
