Swedish company claims to have a swipe patent that is used by Apple

While Apple seems all too keen on taking to the courts in order to protect its patents, it appears that it may be in the back foot in a new battle that has yet to even begin.

A Swedish firm claims to be in possession of a patent which relates to horizontal swiping and gliding, with Apple's slide-to-unlock gesture being one such example.

The firm, called Neonode, claims to have received the relevant patent during January of this year, and its head of IP, Yossi Shain, says that companies such as Sony and Barnes & Noble are already licensees...

Sprint commits to buying 24 million iPhones from Apple

Sprint is the most recent carrier to have gained Apple's iPhone on its network, after paying big bucks. According to its 10-K filing with the SEC released this morning, Sprint has committed to buying almost $15.5B worth of iPhones from Apple, The Next Web points out.

Asymco figured that each iPhone is sold for roughly $630 ARPU from Apple to Sprint. This means, Sprint has committed to buying almost 24 million iPhones...

AT&T plans to allow developers to pay for users’ data

In an interesting move, AT&T plans to allow developers to pay for users' data, when users are using the developer's app, reports the WSJ. AT&T's network and technology head John Donovan told the WSJ in an interview at MWC 2012 that the service will be similar to a toll-free 1-800 number.

The move will surely be interesting, letting a user use an app without any data being charged to them whatsoever. Donovan says AT&T hopes to roll out the new service within the next year...

Vimeo releases iOS app update, featuring full screen video playback on iPad

Vimeo is a popular alternative to YouTube for sharing videos. Vimeo is known for hosting higher quality pieces and short films, thanks to its pro accounts. The service previously had just an iPhone app, but today has updated its app to version 2.0, bringing support for the iPad.

The iPad UI lets you navigate through Vimeo's functionality natively and also lets you play video full screen. As you can see, it looks very high quality.

Is Facebook reading your text messages? [update: no]

Adding to the recent privacy scare that has been taking place among iOS apps, London-based newspaper Sunday Times is reporting that popular social network Facebook has read users' text messages.

In the report, Sunday Times says that when Facebook was gearing up to launch their new Messenger app, they "admitted" to reading text messages. Facebook's Messenger app plays a similar role to texting, letting you quickly fire off messages to your Facebook friends. It's not known if the issue still continues, but is scary nonetheless...

‘MusicGestures’ adds customized gestures to the stock Music app

MusicGestures is a jailbreak tweak that lends the ability to control the stock Music app with gestures instead of button presses. There are a total of 6 actions (7 if you count disabled as an action) that you can assign to any number of gestures.

The gestures can be used to skip, play, pause, and gather info on both the album cover view, and the individual track view.

It's not the deepest tweak in the shed, but the simplicity of MusicGestures makes it worth a look...

I think it's safe to say that the reaction to the theme was mixed, but perhaps that may change once you see it in action.
