Tablet market continues to be the iPad market

Looks like Steve Jobs wasn't kidding when he proclaimed Apple a mobile devices company at the original iPad unveiling in January 2010. Fast-forward to today and the tablet market is still by and large dominated by the iPad.

According to latest research data by NPD, Apple shipped 17.2 million tablets and notebooks - collectively referred to as 'mobile PCs' - for a cool 22.5 percent share of the entire market. For comparison, second-ranked Hewlett-Packard managed to move just 8.9 million mobile PC units, capturing a 11.6 percent market share.

Just two years ago, it would have been unheard-of for Apple to beat first-tier PC vendors at their own game. But this is 2012 and Apple is riding high on strong momentum that its tablet continues to enjoy in markets the world over...

Hey Apple, here’s your 16MP camera with 4K video capture for 2013 iPhone

OmniVision Technologies yesterday announced two new camera sensors for smartphones and tablets and guess what? Both could be a perfect fit for a 2013 iPhone, if not for the next one.

We're talking about 16-megapixel sensors that shoot 4K video at a remarkable 60 frames per second.

Per Chipworks' teardown analysis, Apple is using OmniVision's OV5642 camera module inside the iPhone 4. Another teardown, also by Chipworks, shows OmniVision's second-generation OV5650 back illumination and OV297AA modules being used on the iPad 2, the new iPad and the iPod Nano music player.

If Apple were to adopt these new OmniVision 16-megapixel camera modules, you could be capturing video either in 4K2K or Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) resolution with an iPhone in your pocket.

Now, if only you had a 4K display to watch these clips in their full ultra high-resolution glory...

TiVo confirms that iOS streaming solution is coming this summer

TiVo, Inc. today announced that this summer TiVo Premiere or Premiere Q DVR subscribers will be able to stream content to "alternative screens" such as the iPhone and iPad by way of TiVo Stream.

TiVo Stream is a new service that provides transcoding to enable content viewing on mobile devices and is "the first product to enable streaming or download of shows simultaneously to multiple portable devices without interrupting what's playing on the television"...

Sony’s Music Unlimited streaming app hits iOS, children run scared

As rumored back in January 2012, Sony has brought its music streaming app to the iOS platform. A newly-released iOS client works in tandem with the Japanese giant's own online music service dubbed Music Unlimited, enabling you to stream Sony's catalog of fifteen million of songs to your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

The program arrives on the heels of Spotify for iPad, which landed on the App Store on May 2, 2012. Of course, to fully enjoy the Music Unlimited iOS app, you'll need to pick a Basic or Premium subscription. Luckily, a 30-day free trial Premium subscription is available, allowing you to sample the service and the iOS app before committing to a monthly subscription, which starts at $3.99 a month...

Not to be outdone by Angry Birds maker Rovio, Disney today announced a new merchandise line for its iPhone puzzler dubbed Where's My Water.

The charming little alligator who lives in the sewers under the city is Disney’s first original character for mobile and can now be bought as a plush toy.

How to prepare for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak

The upcoming iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release is imminent. It's so close we can almost smell it.

For that reason, it would be wise to go ahead and analyse your current situation, and prepare for the jailbreak.

It has been confirmed that the A5 portion of the jailbreak — the jailbreak for iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and the iPad 3 — will only support iOS 5.1.1.

While nothing has been said about A4 devices, it's a good chance that iOS 5.1.1 will be required to jailbreak any device with the new Absinthe tool across the board.

So what should you do? Should you update your device now, or wait until the jailbreak has been officially released?
