IDC sees Android tablets gaining traction, iPad maintaining dominance through 2016

More end-of-the-year forecasts are out, again predicting Apple will shed some of its tablet market share as Android alternatives increase in popularity. This time, the full-size iPad and iPad mini would end 2012 with just under 54 percent, while Android tablets are expected to increase market share to almost 42 percent.

All told, Apple is estimated to hold half the tablet shipments through the year 2016. The figures are interesting, as far as they go, and would appear to be dire news for Apple - until you actually look at the numbers and measure sales versus usage. More about that after the break...

Apple wins trademarks for the Retina moniker and the Game Center icon design

Apple today received two interesting trademark grants seeking to protect the Game Center icon design and the Apple-coined Retina moniker. The former describes a rounded icon divided into four quadrants, each sporting a distinct combination of colors and shapes. It was originally filed in June 2012 under international classes that cover multiplayer games, scoring and tracking game performance and "providing an online portal for social networking through virtual communities".

More important than the Game Center icon is the widely used Retina name, now a registered trademark of Apple, Inc.

Apple’s Technologies boss cashes in shares

Bob Mansfield, Apple's un-retired SVP of Technologies, is another high-ranked executive to cash in shares of AAPL stock after an "insanely insane" sell-off that saw a quarter of Apple's market cap wiped off. Like other executives, Mansfield likely figured the move makes financial sense ahead of a rumored "fiscal cliff".

According to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Mansfield, a long-time Apple veteran, unloaded 35,000 shares. At $582.21 a share, the transaction earned him $20,377,507.50. He still holds 29,548 shares and will get another 150,000 shares in June 2013 and March 2016 provided he stays with Apple.

Though Mansfield wanted to retire, Apple's boss has managed to convince him to stick around for two more years. If Cook gave me a $2 million a month paycheck as a compensation for an advisement position, I'd also un-retire in a heartbeat....

If the global picture of mobile devices were a soap opera, it would be called "As the World Turns". A constant stream of numbers show how demand and usage is shifting away from the U.S. and to China. The latest figures show the Asian country will soon top the United States with the most active iOS and Android smartphone users.

While China's 167 million iOS and Android users currently puts the nation slightly behind the US at 181 million, that ranking will change in early 2013 as China's triple-digit growth rate easily outpaces America's maturing smartphone market, according to a new report released Wednesday by a mobile analytics firm...

Another head rolls over the Maps debacle as Apple seeks advice from TomTom

Eddy Cue, Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services, is reported to have fired Richard Williamson, an executive who oversaw the team that created Apple's own and troubled iOS 6 mapping service. The development marks the second high-ranked management departure of an Apple executive over so-called Mapgate, following the ouster of iOS boss and Steve Jobs confidant Scott Forstall last month after a CEO apology over the glaring flaws in Apple's mapping software.

“We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make maps better”, Cook wrote in lat month's letter of apology. Rdio for iOS gets a major facelift, new features

If you stream your music these days rather than spend your hard-earned cash on individual tracks on iTunes, you're likely using Spotify, Pandora or Rdio. The latter music subscription service is available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Brazil, Australia, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and New Zealand. The team just pushed a major update to their iOS and Android clients.

The software finally brings a unified interface across mobile platforms and the web, ditching the old grid-based navigation and replacing it with a consistently available sidebar that we're increasingly seeing in other apps like Path and Facebook. Apple granted 36 patents covering Siri mic icon design, Lightning, widgets and more

Apple this morning has received patents covering more than three dozen different technologies, ranging from the obvious to the obscure. The company's patent filings as of late are even inspiring parody treatments like the Apple alphabet patent. Among today's grants are the filings describing ways to interface sports equipment with your iPhone, iPad or iPod, patents for Mac OS X dashboards and the MacBook keyboard and others seeking to protect icons and designs of popular software features.

Most people know of Apple's long-time association with Nike and the Nike+ app that records your running routine. Earlier this year, the Cupertino, California company filed a patent to go one step farther, interfacing your iPhone with a treadmill, or other workout machine at the local gym. Now it appears that patent was granted. But, wait, there's plenty more gadgets and gizmos Apple wants protected...

Moving toward a more connected world, we need our digital stuff more frequently and certainly when we are on the go. Whether you are a jet setter that hops around the world or a family man that needs to share the family pictures with dear old mom, size and portability matter greatly. Combine that digital need with the post-PC era, where the jet setter sized down to an iPad for space, convenience, and weight, and dear old mom just cannot figure out how to use a computer.
