iH8sn0w and winocm show off iOS 6.1.x jailbreak

Hackers winocm and iH8sn0w posted an interesting video last night, demonstrating what appeared to be a working untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.x. The clip shows a 5th gen iPod touch on iOS 6.1.3 navigating Cydia and running Surenix's popular ayecon theme.

The move puts an end to the radio silence we've been experiencing since early October, when winocm gave a definite ETA for the iOS 6.1.x jailbreak as 'before 2014.' But don't get your hopes up. It still doesn't look like it's going to be released publicly anytime soon...

Good news for folks who stuck around on iOS 6.1.3/4 in hopes of scoring an early jailbreak, developer winocm has confirmed that a public release for his late-version iOS 6 hack will be available in the next few months.

Winocm has been working on an iOS 6.1.3/4 jailbreak for a few months now. He's shown it off on video, and even let our very own Jeff take it for a spin. And today he answered the oft-asked ETA question: 'before 2014.'

Nothing really new here from what we'd already been told in the last weeks, but progress is being made, and that is encouraging. It looks like at this point, only a few selected devices are slowing the process down.

On the iOS 7 front, pod2g said last week he was more and more confident in a jailbreak for Apple's latest mobile OS.

Apple no longer signing iOS 6.1.3/4

Bad news this evening for anyone hoping to downgrade from iOS 7 to a lower firmware. It appears that Apple is no longer signing iOS 6.1.3 and 6.1.4 for a majority of its devices, effectively terminating their ability to downgrade.

This is significant for a few reasons. For one, folks who upgraded to iOS 7 and don't like the redesigned UI are now essentially stuck with it for the foreseeable future. And more importantly, word is a 6.1.3/4 jailbreak is coming...

If you're on iOS 6.1.3/4 and do not plan on upgrading to iOS 7 today in the hopes that a jailbreak will soon be available, you'll be happy to hear this. A primitive, albeit working, untethered jailbreak for the two firmwares has been caught on video.

Winocm, the lone hacker/developer who has been making a lot of noise on the jailbreak front in recent weeks, is responsible for the hack, which was posted on Reddit this morning. And while there'ss no ETA for a release yet, it's a very good sign...

Developer @winocm has been pretty vocal as of late about his intentions to eventually release a jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 and iOS 6.1.4 devices. Although we generally take such claims with a heaping helping on my favorite seasoning, winocm is, from what I've been able to gather, a respectable member of the jailbreak community.

After all, this is the same developer that worked on an iOS 6.x downgrade, the jailbreak tweak Accentify, and has had various other contributions to the community. Needless to say, when he announced that he had an untether binary that still needed a bit of work, my ears perked up.

A few days ago, winocm reached out to iDB about his progress on the jailbreak. Although the project is still knee deep in its development phase, he did allow us to go hands on with some of his work. Today, with the help of winocm, I was able to install Cydia on my iPhone 4S running 6.1.3. If we're ever going to see a proper tool released for the iOS 6.1.3 jailbreak, he just could be the developer to do so.

Yes, we have video of Cydia running on my iPhone 4S, and yes it's legit. Although he has asked us not to speak about the process involved in getting a working Cydia on my 4S, I was there and watched him perform the process from start to finish. In other words, I can vouch for the Cydia install, and I can certainly vouch for video's legitimacy. Have a look...

Hacker claims to have iOS 6.1.3 untether binary

With iOS 7 on the horizon, many rumblings have been surfacing lately about the possibility of an iOS 6.1.3 jailbreak. First there was UnthreadedJB, who after releasing an obscure iOS 5.1 jailbreak for CDMA enable iPhone 4's, claims to have an iOS 6.1.3 jailbreak. Those claims have never been solidified by any independent sources, so the verdict is definitely still out about its legitimacy.

But there's still hope. iOS hacker winocm, well known throughout the jailbreak community, took to twitter this morning to confirm that he has a binary for an iOS 6.1.3 untethered jailbreak.

P0sixninja says he’s discovered exploits for next jailbreak

This is kind of interesting. Well-known iOS hacker and (former?) Chronic Dev Team member p0sixninja says that he has discovered enough exploits in iOS 6 to build a new jailbreak. The previous one, as most of you know, was recently shut down by Apple.

But it appears that p0sixninja has discovered some vulnerabilities that were not patched by the company's security team in the latest iOS update, as he tweeted out earlier tonight: "Well, so far it looks like the next jailbreak might be created entirely by me..."

Apple yesterday let iOS 6.1.3 out of the gate, fixing the widely reported Lock screen vulnerability. As you're probably aware, the glitch was first detailed a month ago and lets people with access to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch easily bypass your passcode and mess with your private data on the device. But as is often the case, new software releases fix old bugs and introduce new ones to be squashed in the future.

A report Wednesday claims an all-new Lock screen vulnerability has been discovered in iOS 6.1.3, one making it easy to - you guessed right - bypass one's passcode and gain access to an unsuspecting user's contacts and photos kept on the device. Luckily, this one can be avoided easily by disabling the Voice Dial feature...

iOS 6.1.3 kills evasi0n jailbreak

It was fun while it lasted, but it appears that Apple has finally put an end to evasi0n. Earlier today, the company released iOS 6.1.3 to the masses, and as expected, it contains patches for multiple exploits used in the popular iOS 6.x jailbreak.

MuscleNerd confirmed our fears on Twitter just a few moments ago, pointing out that Apple has credited the evad3rs with the discovery of 4 of the 6 security flaws that were patched in today's update. So jailbreakers should stay far away...

iOS 6.1.3 is out with fixes for Lock screen vulnerability, Japan Maps improvements

Apple has just issued iOS 6.1.3 (build 10B329), an incremental update to its mobile operating system powering iPhones, iPads and iPods. This particular update brings fixes to the widely reported Lock screen vulnerability, first discovered a month ago, which lets people with access to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to easily bypass your passcode and get to your personal information on the device.

Today's firmware also contains Maps improvements for Japan. If you're jailbroken, you'll want to stay away from this update until we collect more information...

PlanetBeing: evasi0n jailbreak likely killed in upcoming iOS 6.1.3 update

We knew that the fun wouldn't last forever, and it looks like the vulnerabilities used for the evasi0n jailbreak will be fixed in an upcoming iOS update. PlanetBeing, one of the founding members of the evad3rs team that brought us the long awaited iOS 6.x untethered jailbreak, reports that Apple has patched one of the five exploits that evasi0n uses to accomplish the jailbreak.

PlanetBeing, known as David Wang among close associates, briefly sat down with Forbes writer Andy Greenberg, and confirmed what everyone knew was inevitable. The evasi0n jailbreak will most likely be patched in iOS 6.1.3.
