iOS 5 Running On a 21-Inch Touchscreen

We've showed you tons of new features in iOS 5, but we've yet to show you what iOS 5 looks like on something slightly bigger than the iPad. Thanks to the iOS Simulator, you can now see what iOS 5 looks like on a 21-inch touchscreen display!

Dissident and i0n1c on Banning Pirated Apps in iOS 5 Jailbreak

Stefan Esser, better known as "i0n1c," has been receiving a lot of heat from the jailbreak community as of late. Stefan is a prominent member of the jailbreak developer scene, and he was responsible for the untethered exploit that has been used for the iOS 4.3 jailbreak.

i0n1c recently introduced the idea of banning pirated apps in the iOS 5 jailbreak. He stated that if he were to release the jailbreak for iOS 5, he would consider placing a restriction on installing apps from the infamous 'Installous' repo. Millions of jailbreakers use Installous to download pirated apps.

Hackulous, the group behind Installous, obviously feels very differently about i0n1c's notion. The frontman for Hackulous, known as Dissident, has also shared his thoughts on the issue of banning cracked apps through a jailbreak.

New in iOS 5: Grid Lines in Camera App

And we continue our exploration of new features in iOS 5. Today we're looking at a new feature in the camera app that brings grid lines to the screen display. The grid lines are very helpful for getting the shot straight (horizon, edges of buildings, etc, can be used to ensure the camera is leveled).

The grid lines can also be very helpful to "frame" the shot as the center is clearly visible, so offsetting any subject from the center (or not) becomes easier...

WeeFacebook: View Status Updates in iOS 5 Notification Center

Over the past few weeks, jailbreak developers have been churning out custom widgets for the new iOS 5 Notification Center like crazy. Even though the new software is still in beta, the jailbreak community has already hacked it and created a variety of new tweaks.

The most recent one to surface comes from developer Manuel Gebele. Surprisingly enough, it's called WeeFacebook and it gives you a window into your social networking account from the Notification Center...

New in iOS 5: Simultaneous App Downloads

When Apple first unveiled iOS 5 earlier this month, Scott Forstall and company mentioned that the new firmware would house over 200 new features. While only a few of them were touched on during the company's keynote, people have been working non-stop to uncover the hidden additions.

The latest tip to surface comes from the folks over at Apple'N'Apps. The blog noticed a change in iOS 5 that has to do with app downloading. It appears the new firmware will allow users to download multiple apps at a time, even over 3G...

Here’s What iOS 5’s Initial Setup Looks Like on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4

Sure, the iPhone has been receiving the most press regarding iOS 5, but some of Apple's other devices stand to benefit greatly from the update as well.

I've had the privilege of being able to update both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 with the latest and greatest mobile operating system, and frankly, it rocks.

As you likely are already well aware of, Apple has adopted a well received PC Free mantra for iOS 5, and that makes setting up a new device a relatively painless affair.

It's so nice to see your device welcome you, instead of staring blankly at that ugly "connect to iTunes" message when turning on your device for the first time.

Check out the following video walkthroughs of both the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 in iOS 5 initial setup action...

2 New Notification Center Widgets: BatteryCenter and MusicCenter

Jailbreak developers have been on a roll over the past two weeks, releasing several custom widgets for the new Notification Center in iOS 5. From the looks of things, it doesn't appear that the community plans on slowing down anytime soon.

Programmer Aaron Wright has recently released not one, but two jailbreak tweaks for Apple's iOS 5 beta software. Jailbroken folks on iOS 5 are more than welcome to try out the 2 new widgets, which are available for free from the developer's repo...

New in iOS 5: AirPlay Mirroring for iPad 2

We did a post about the future of iOS gaming a few days ago, but the article only touched on the potential of the young platform.  For the last couple of years, Apple has been putting pieces in place to make iOS a heavy hitter in the mobile gaming industry.

First, there came the App Store, which provided a distribution channel for iOS games. Then came innovations like the 3-axis gyroscope for motion control and AirPlay to wirelessly stream content. The latest piece of the puzzle is the new iPad 2 mirroring feature in iOS 5...

Web App Performance in iOS 5 Greatly Improved

Web app performance in iOS 4 has been disappointing. It's been speculated that Apple has been intentionally handicapping web app performance in iOS 4. When websites are launched from the iPhone's homescreen, loading times become much longer than when a site is opened straight from the Mobile Safari app.

In iOS 5, it's been discovered that fullscreen web apps from the homescreen can access the Nitro Javascript engine that sped up Mobile Safari in iOS 4.3. These "dynamic-codesigning" privileges allow for a much faster web app experience in iOS 5.

New in iOS 5: ‘Find on Page’ Search from iPad Keyboard

The "Find on Page" feature in Safari isn't new, as it was introduced with iOS 4.2. Up until iOS 5, to use this feature, you had to tap the “Google” search bar at the top right and start typing. As Google gave you suggestions, you also had the “on this page” option appearing at the bottom.

iOS 5 is making this feature much smoother on the iPad, as it brings it directly to the keyboard...

iH8sn0w's popular jailbreak tool for Windows, Sn0wBreeze, has been updated with support for an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak on the iPhone 3GS. iOS 5 is still in the Beta 1 stage, and Sn0wBreeze Beta 2 is the first method available for an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak on the iPhone 3GS.

Thanks to the old bootrom on the 3GS, users can enjoy a fully untethered iOS 5 Beta 1 jailbreak with the newly released Sn0wBreeze update.

Future iMacs and MacBooks to Charge Your iPhone Wirelessly?

In last week's iOS 5 announcement, there seemed to be an emphasis on "cutting the cord." With new iCloud and Wi-Fi sync services, users will no longer have to depend on tethering their iDevices to their computers for syncs and backups.

From the looks of this Apple patent that surfaced earlier this month, it seems that Apple has been researching methods to do away with the infamous white USB cord completely. The filing is titled, "Wireless power utilization in a local computing environment..."
