iPhone 5

iFixit won’t like this: iPhone 5 could sport tamper-resistant screws with asymmetric heads

The next iPhone won't just screw developers with its taller, four-inch display and an increased resolution of 640-by-1136 pixels (though both iOS 6 and the SDK have been discovered to be scalable for taller displays) and accessory makers with a redesigned dock connector (unless Apple provides a 30-pin dock adapter), it could as well screw repair shops (pun intended) with a special screw design calling for asymmetric heads.

As if sealing the battery and allegedly using a new in-cell display technology wasn't enough, now iPhone repair shops will have to obtain non-existent tools just to pry open the upcoming device...

The entire iPhone 5 front assembly pictured

It seems that everybody in Asia and their mother have some spare iPhone 5 parts to share with the web at large. A new report is out today with a pair of images showing the purported front assembly of the next iPhone, meticulously disassembled in a true teardown analysis manner...

Full on image of the next iPhone dock connector suggests MagSafe functionality

Both big media and bloggers agree that with the next iPhone release come this September, Apple is going to debut a brand new dock connector to replace the aging 30-pin thing present on existing devices. The company will allegedly deploy the new dock connector across all future iOS devices.

Built with space in mind, the new connector was originally said to have 19 pins or fewer. A new report surfaced today sporting a crisp shot of the new dock connector with a metal ring inside the casing cutout, suggesting an exciting possibility: that the cable could attach magnetically, just like the MagSafe connector for Apple's notebooks...

This is how thin the new iPhone might be

We've heard the rumors that the new iPhone will be 7.6mm thick, but what does that actually mean? Obviously, it will be thinner than the outgoing iPhone 4S, but exactly how thin will it be?

Is there anything that we can use to get a good picture of how thin the new iPhone will be, before it's officially unveiled in September? Well, actually, yes. And the good news is that you probably already have one in your possession.

The next iPhone could be 7.6mm thin

Last week, a video made rounds depicting a 0.1mm thinner front glass part said to belong to Apple's upcoming iPhone, in addition to a smaller home button and other interesting tidbits. Today, a new report out of Asia asserts that the next iPhone's enclosure is going to be just 7.6mm thick.

That's a marked improvement over the iPhone 4/4S that measures 9.3mm deep. So much about Tim Cook promising that "We're doubling down on security. I mean it"...

This is what holding the iPhone 5 in your hand might look like

There is no shortage of iPhone 5 mockups these days as the big launch draws nearer with each passing day. Like all the other concept renders before it, this one's also based on leaked components, engineering samples, case molds and cases we've seen so far.

What's unusual about this particular set of renders is that the images depict what holding an iPhone 5 in one's hand may look like...

iOS 6 found to be scalable for taller displays, supports 5 rows of icons

It's widely believed that the new iPhone will, for the first time, feature a larger screen. It seems like it's been all but confirmed with reports from major news outlets and leaked next-gen iPhone parts.

But if you're still skeptical about Apple enlarging the screen on its smartphone, you might want to check this out. iOS 6 has been discovered to be completely scaleable to fit a taller, 640 x 1136 display...

Nokia, Samsung countering iPhone 5 with ‘iconic’ Windows Phone 8 devices

The next iPhone is upon us (think September 21-ish) and Apple's rivals are scrambling to conveniently time their upcoming 'hero' device announcements around the same timeframe. That's brave tactics, trying to divert spotlight away from the mother of all upgrades, as analyst Gene Munster dubbed the iPhone 5 release.

Both Samsung and Nokia are set to unveil new high-end devices built around Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software. One of the devices is being described in court documents as an "iconic smartphone". All phones should be on store shelves in time for the holiday shopping frenzy. Should Apple be worried?

Apple to roll out smaller dock connector to all iOS products this fall

We've been hearing that Apple was going to be changing the iPhone's dock connector since February of this year. Not only has the change been confirmed by a number of news outlets, but we've seen several leaked next-gen iPhone parts with the smaller charging port.

Along with its new smartphone, Apple is also expected to be using the new port in its iPad mini, which is rumored to debut this fall. But apparently it's not stopping there. iMore has learned that Apple is rolling out the smaller dock connector across its entire iOS line...

Sprint heavily discounts the iPhone 4S ahead of iPhone 5 launch

We just got words that Sprint was currently selling the iPhone 4S 16GB at a $50 discount, for a total price of $149.99. According to a Sprint retailer who reached out to us, the company has been notifying stores that this new pricing would be in place until September 14th.

The timing seems very appropriate as the iPhone 5 next iPhone has been rumored to be announced at an event on September 12th, and will supposedly be available for sale on September 21st...

Does Epic Games have an iPhone 5?

Developer Epic Games, the maker of the awesome Infinity Blade series, an elegiac masterpiece that really showcases what iOS gadgets are capable of, may be in possession of one of the very few production units of Apple's highly anticipated handset, the iPhone 5.

A reader pointed us to a page on Epic's website which makes a brief mention of the device. It could be nothing, but it could be everything as well.

If Apple's elite developers are testing their warez against a sixth-generation iPhone, than the official unveiling couldn't be more than a few short weeks away, as previously rumored...

Video depicts 0.1mm thinner, more scratch resistance iPhone 5 front panel

Two months ago a video made rounds comparing side-by-side the current iPhone 4S front panel to a 4.07-inch panel allegedly belonging to a sixth-generation iPhone. Another video showing off a partially assembled device scrapped together from the allegedly leaked parts also piqued our interest.

And now, a new clip hits the Interwebs comparing the front panel of the current iPhone 4S and the rumored iPhone 5. Some of the stuff that we gleaned from the seven-minute clip include a centered FaceTime camera and a taller display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, which aligns nicely with the previously leaked schematics. More findings right below...
