Reports are coming in that Motorola Mobility has just filed a significant lawsuit against Apple in the US over the illegal use of its intellectual property. Motorola believes that Apple is using its patents in both its iPhone 4S and iCloud products.
MM recently won an injunction against Apple late last year in a German court. And although the decision has yet to make an impact on Apple's sales in the country, it could certainly play a major part in Motorola's new lawsuit here in the States...
A new report form the boys and girls of Google has revealed a couple of interesting facts about mobile phone usage across five key markets.
Looking at the five countries that are leading the charge towards a connected life – United States, UK, Japan, France and Germany – the search and mobile giant has come to a couple of interesting conclusions.

New sales data from marketing firm Nielsen has revealed that Apple's launch of the iPhone 4S in October has had a tremendous impact on overall iOS market share in the past quarter. While Android had a stranglehold on the mobile sector in October, with an impressive 61.6% share of the market, its numbers slipped to just 46.9% in December due to an impressive 20% surge by iOS during the quarter.

Normally I wouldn't dare log into my Gmail account from a public terminal, but this QR based login from Google is definitely a step in the right direction from a security standpoint.
As first reported by Ian Paul from PC World, you can now securely log into your Gmail account without typing your username or password into a computer.

Google has always touted its Android operating system as being "open" when compared to Apple's "closed" iOS platform. In MG Siegler's recent blog post, the TechCrunch writer/Apple pundit explains why he hates Google for ultimately turning its back on the customer:

When I see Google talk about how “open” the platform is, setting it up as the foil to the “closed” (and framed as “evil”) iPhone, I want to scream and rip someone’s head off. Apple, for all the shit they get for being “closed” and “evil”, has actually done far more to wrestle control back from the carriers and put it into the hands of consumers. Google set off to help in this goal, then stabbed us all in the back and went the complete other way, to the side of the carriers. Microsoft has for the first time admitted that it completely redesigned its Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system because of the way Apple had changed the market with the iPhone's release back in 2007.
Speaking to The New York Times, Microsoft's Jim Belfiore admitted that Apple "created a sea change" when the iPhone was introduced, and that Microsoft was forced to come up with something unique in order to compete with Apple's new smartphone.

Apple keeps hitting new app download milestones, with the latest number being all about the iPad and its huge popularity since its initial introduction in early 2010.
Since Apple made the iPad available to purchase, a massive 3 billion apps have been downloaded from Apple's App Store for the tablet. To put that into some kind of perspective, it took the equally-as-popular iPhone a whole six months longer to reach the same milestone after the App Store's opening in 2008.
The news comes as rumors begin to circulate about what Apple could be working on for the next-generation iPad...
It seems that someone at Google has been pretty busy. You may remember how we told you about "Siri for Android," an app on Google's Android Market which claimed to be just what the name suggested.
Siri has obviously has not been ported to Android, as the app was discovered to merely be a shortcut with a Siri-like icon that pointed to Google's own built-in voice recognition engine. The app's developer also called itself "Official App," which was clearly designed to confuse people into thinking the app was, well, official.
Google has since taken note, and the offending app is now gone from the Android Market...
It seems like everyone is in a hurry to update their applications before the end of the year. We've seen major updates roll out today for Pulse news reader and the Kindle Fire app, and now Google has pushed one out for its Voice software.
Google Voice users will be happy to hear that the iOS app has finally been brought up to speed with its Android counterpart. The update brings handy additions, like multi-recipient text messaging and support for Sprint iPhone users.
