At last, Facebook Messenger gets native iOS 8 Share extension

Today, social networking behemoth Facebook issued a small yet important update to its mobile messaging software for the iPhone and iPad. Facebook Messenger version 22 is now available in the App Store and with it comes a much appreciated and long overdue iOS 8 extension.

With it, you can at last send pieces of content to Messenger without leaving other apps. Using iOS 8's standard Share sheet, it's simple to share photos, videos and links directly with Messenger contacts, without leaving context of the app you're currently using.

Facebook update allows you to add stickers to photos

Facebook today began rolling out a new feature to its mobile apps that will allow users to add stickers to their photos before uploading them. The functionality is similar to that in the "Stickered for Messenger" app the social network released back in December.

Users who have received the update should see a small icon at the bottom of each uploaded image, which you can tap to see all of the stickers you can use. After selecting a sticker, you can determine how big you want it and where it should be placed on your photo.

Facebook is working on virtual reality apps that would allow you to create content

Facebook chief product officer Chris Cox revealed on Tuesday that the company is planning virtual reality apps, following its acquisition of Oculus close to a year ago. The revelation came at the Code/Media conference happening in California this week.

While Cox wouldn't share specifics of the apps Facebook is working on, the product chief told Recode the virtual reality apps' users would be able to make virtual reality content. 

Facebook launches new Place Tips feature in your News Feed, rolls out Facebook Bluetooth Beacons

Yesterday, Facebook announced a new feature in the hope of fending off threat posed by Foursquare and Yelp, both of which rule the crowd-sourced location discovery market.

Place Tips, as it's called, injects useful information about the place you're right at, including your friends’ recommendations and “fun, useful and relevant info,” right inside your News Feed.

But don't your worry, you can turn it off at anytime!

Facebook’s Paper app now supports sharing from iOS Favorites album and more

Facebook's Paper for iPhone app has been refreshed today with improved performance as well as faster way of sharing photos, in addition to fixing a few issues “you’ve let us know about.”

When sharing photos, your Camera Roll items are now organized by date. Even better, the app now supports the new Favorites album introduced in iOS 8 which collates the images you've favorited by tapping on the heart icon in the iOS Photos app.

Facebook rolls out new Super Bowl experience

Super Bowl XLIX is upon us and Facebook wants to beat out Twitter to the punch and become the epicenter of conversation. Building on the more than 50 million people who joined the conversation on Facebook during last year's Super Bowl, the social networking service today announced a brand new experience at facebook.com/superbowl.

Replacing Twitter as your Super Bowl companion begins with official posts from the NFL/NBC and related stories by teams and individual players. You'll also find live scoring updates, real-time reactions, posts from your friends (with “watching Super Bowl XLIX” in their status updates) and more, all neatly organized in one place.

Facebook Groups adds member search and three new admin features

Facebook's dedicated Groups app received a major refresh Thursday, bumping the groups-management mobile software to version 5.0 while enabling several new features for members and administrators.

Both group members and administrators can now search for other members in groups. Additionally, members can now manage notifications more easily.

Admins can now take advantage of a trio of new features for better management of their own groups, including the ability to block users requesting to join.

Facebook starts removing deliberate hoaxes from your News Feed

Facebook today announced it is (again) stepping up fight against spammers by making certain changes to cut down on the number of posts in the News Feed which file as deliberate hoaxes or misleading news stories.

These include click-bait headlines such as “Man sees dinosaur on hike in Utah” and scams offering users, say, a chance to “win a lifetime supply of coffee,” if only you'd be so kind as to follow the link, please.

Facebook testing voice transcription feature in Messenger ahead of official rollout

Facebook has begun testing a new feature in its mobile Messenger software that can read transcripts of received voice messages in case you don't want to listen to them.

The company is currently testing the feature with a tiny subset of Messenger's more than 500 million users ahead of a forthcoming launch in the near future.

In addition to Messenger's voice transcription capability, the firm announced buying a successful boutique design firm which has created popular mobile applications and online services, including the read-later app Readability and the rising blogging platform Medium.

Facebook launching Work iOS app for FB@Work

Facebook announced on Wednesday that it's launching FB@Work, a new product that will allow businesses to create their own social networks for their employees that are built to look and act like Facebook itself, to collaborate on work projects.

Facebook is finally bringing itself to the enterprise after ten years.

As part of the new service, Facebook plans to launch a new app titled "Work" for iOS. The FB@Work product will also be accessible through the web and looks exactly like the consumer facing version of Facebook.

Facebook adds AMBER Alerts to people’s News Feeds on mobile and the web

Facebook on Tuesday announced adding AMBER Alerts to both its mobile applications and the web interface in order to help find missing children in a more systematic way than before.

Realized through a partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the initiative will deliver AMBER Alerts, which include photographs and other details about the missing child, to people’s News Feeds in targeted search areas after a child has been abducted and the National Center has issued an alert, said the social networking behemoth.

Facebook is betting that the power of its network will help find the missing children and is encouraging users to share these alert with friends and link directly to the National Center’s missing child poster.
