Apple has removed the paid version of MobileMe from its retail stores and website. You can now only sign up for a free 60-day trial on the web.
Apple is holding an event next week, and MobileMe will most likely be revamped alongside the introduction of a new iPad model. Up until now, MobileMe has cost $99/year. There's a good chance that Apple will make their cloud-based service free for customers, or introduce some type of tiered, "pro" pricing alongside the standard MobileMe package.
I have to admit, I was quite upset when Apple bought Lala.com, bringing an abrupt end to what was an awesome music streaming service. But the prospect of Apple introducing their own streaming service using Lala's technology quickly put my pain at ease.
At least that's been the ongoing rumor since the Lala deal went down back in December of 2009. Ever since, the rumors have swirled regarding Apple's next move, climaxing with the purchase of a gargantuan 500,000 square foot server farm capable of handling all of that extra bandwidth.
Will Apple finally introduce a streaming service similar to Lala, or are they headed in a different direction?
Apple has recently patented a virtual "locker" for encrypted data storage in Mac OS X. Speculation is that this new feature will work with Apple's revamp of MobileMe and heavily integrate with iOS.
This virtual vault will further Apple's focus on cloud-based technologies and probably work like Dropbox. Files dropped into said folder on OS X will sync with Apple's cloud-based storage service (probably replacing iDisk) and encrypt data as it is uploaded to the cloud.
Rumors regarding the mysterious "iPhone Nano" have been surfacing everywhere lately. Speculation started gaining some traction last week, with a report from Bloomberg saying that Apple has been working on a smaller and cheaper version of the iPhone.
The Wall Street Journal recently corroborated and added some details to Bloomberg's report. According to the WSJ, the "iPhone Nano" will be considerably smaller than the current iPhone and heavily rely on Apple's MobileMe service.
