How Good the Mac App Store Could Be

Now that Apple has announced a desktop version of the App Store, there is much speculation on what we are actually getting. There are already quite a few OS X software marketplaces out there, though none are as polished as the iPhone's App Store.

If Apple is smart, they will likely add the Mac App Store as a way to run universal apps and release an iOS runtime platform for the desktop. Just think about it for a minute.

There isn't much unification between doing tasks on an iPhone and a Mac simultaneously, save for the apps that sync with their desktop counterparts. Here are some predictions I have about benefits of supporting universal apps on Macs.

Is AT&T Preparing to Lose iPhone Exclusivity?

With the rumors flying again that Verizon might be getting a CDMA iPhone sometime next year, it looks like AT&T might be getting ready for life after iPhone exclusivity. Bloomberg notes that AT&T has been ramping up new smartphones on their network.

Lately they have added several new Windows 7 and Android phones to their mix of units. AT&T has said numerous times that they are not worried about losing the iPhone exclusivity due to the increase in popularity with Android and interest in Windows 7 Mobile.

Next iPhone in Final Field Testing Stage, CDMA on the Way

Boy Genius Report has reported (from an inside source at Apple) that the new CDMA iPhone has reached final testing stages. There is no confirmation that this iPhone is specifically intended for Verizon, but CDMA compatibility is almost a given. The above image is of the rumored device, which BGR says may contain a SIM card slot...

Apple Sold 14.1 Million iPhones in the Last 3 Months

Apple just released their fourth quarter financial results and let me tell you right away that the numbers are pretty amazing. The company posted record revenue of $20.34 billion, compared to $12.21 billion in the same period last year.

The company sold 14.1 million iPhones in its fourth quarter, which represents an increase of 91% compared to last year. They also sold 3.89 million Macs, 9.05 million iPods, and 4.19 million iPads during the quarter.

Apple Trademarks the Phrase “There’s an App For That”

Apple's trademark filing for their famous catchphrase, "There's an App For That" has been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent is filed under the Advertising, Business and Retail Services, Computer and Software service and Scientific services categories.

The trademark applies to, "Retail store services featuring computer software provided via the Internet and other computer and electronic communication networks; retail store services featuring computer software for use on handheld mobile digital electronic devices and other consumer electronics."

This doesn't mean that there can't be anymore cheesy blog headlines with the catchphrase (which I have been guilty of a couple of times). It does mean that Apple can pursue a commercial infringement of the trademark with much greater ease in court...

Apple Patents MagSafe Power Connector for iOS Devices

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published an interesting continuation patent application from Apple yesterday. Apple's patent says, "the connector 62 may be a power connector such as the MagSafe power connector manufactured by Apple Inc. of Cupertino, Calif. The MagSafe power connector utilizes a magnetic attraction to help retain a corresponding connector thereto."

Plenty of speculation could be made about what MagSafe charging means for iOS devices...
