iPhone 4 Beginning to Eat Android’s Lunch on Verizon

Apple's iPhone 4 has only been on sale on Verizon for around 6 months, but it's already stealing Android's lunch money, according to new stats from Chitika Insights this week.

The drop in Android sales since the iPhone 4 landed on Verizon's doorstep sees Google's mobile OS share dropping from 51.4% to 41.1% ...

Apple Could Ship a Staggering 100 Million iPhones This Year Alone

Apple seems to be unstoppable as of late, with it recently being announced that the Cupertino company closed ahead of ExonnMobil as the world's most valuable company. The iPhone is doing well, too. Sales were up for Apple in the previous business quarter, and the unveiling of the iPhone 5 is expected to garner a huge influx in sales this holiday season.

After all is said and done, Apple could very well sell more iPhones in 2011 than every previous year combined. Specifically, if the numbers pan out, Apple could potentially move 100 million iPhone units before the year's end.

iOS and Android Now Account For 62% of Smartphone Market

New figures released by Gartner show sales for smartphone handsets during the second quarter of 2011, and two mobile giants are apparently beginning to take over the market.

Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms now account for around 62% of the smartphone market, according to the report, which represents a doubling of the percentage during the same period in 2010...

Apple Now the Most Valuable Company in the World

Yesterday we told you that, for the first time, Apple had briefly become the most valuable company in the world, dethroning Exxon for a few minutes, and ending the day at the #2 spot.

Today, for the first time ever, Apple ended the trading day ahead of Exxon, and Apple is now the company with the largest market capitalization...

Shocker: Apple’s iPad is Cannibalising Notebook Sales

Way back when Apple first announced the iPad last year, the Cupertino outfit was very careful not to put its new device up against the notebook market. 'The iPad is a new class of device," it said, claiming that it fitted in-between the smartphone and notebook, filling the gap with a large, touchscreen display that filled our hearts with joy and wonder.

Fast-forward a year and a handful of months, and it's clear that the iPad has taken sales away from at least some notebook manufacturers. The netbook market is all but dead, and the same companies who tried to sell $300 laptops are now selling $500 iPad competitors...

Apple Was Briefly the Most Valuable Publicly Traded Company

In an interview with Edge Magazine, EA founder Trip Hawkins commented that Apple would soon see its downfall. He noted that it wasn't necessarily Apple's own fault, but that history has taught us how peaking empires always falter.

Hawkins was right about one thing: Apple has peaked. Not in terms of innovation or profit, but for a brief moment Apple was the most valuable publicly traded company on the market...

There Are Now 450,000 Active Apps in the App Store

Last month, Apple announced that their iOS App Store had reached 425,000 live applications. By "live" I mean currently active and ready to download, not the total number of apps that have ever been published.

Now, nearly a month later, it seems the mobile world's favorite application destination has reached another significant milestone. There are now 450,000 active applications in the App Store...

The U.S. Divided by Mobile OS of Choice [Infographic]

I've always said that the Android vs. iOS debate could spark another civil war here in the states. It seems like arguments for and against the industry's 2 hottest platforms can get heated in a hurry.

With that in mind, here's an interesting infographic displaying the results of mobile ad firm Jumptap's ad-tracking data. It shows the U.S. with states color-coded according to which mobile OS dominates the region. Hit the jump to find out what OS your state prefers.

Apple is Top Dog in Worldwide Smartphone Shipments

The iPhone seems to be unstoppable lately, with it recently being announced that Apple is the number one smartphone manufacturer in the US, and that Apple also ships more smartphones than Nokia.

A recent report states that Apple ships more smartphones worldwide than any other smartphone manufacturer. This gives the iPhone unprecedented success in the global market...

74% of Verizon Smartphone Users Say They’re Waiting on the iPhone 5

When the iPhone 4 finally launched on Verizon's network, it was expected to be a godsend. U.S. customers could finally choose a different carrier if they had issues with AT&T. The device was projected to sell more than 5 million units — and then it didn't. Verizon barely managed to sell half that.

So why were analysts so far off? My guess is that it was related to a misconception that a lot of AT&T customers were unhappy, but we're not. There is also a good possibility that a lot of folks decided to hold off in anticipation for a summer-unveiling of a new model. In fact, analyst Gene Munster thinks it's a real good possibility...

The iPhone Now Dominates the Skies

According to new a figure coming out of in-flight WiFi provider GoGo, Apple's iPhone makes up two thirds of mobile device usage in the skies. The iPhone's smaller sibling, the iPod touch, also accounts for a massive 20% of those using a small-screened device to access the internet while in the sky.

It's not such good news for Google's Android, however. According to an AllThingsD report, despite there being more different Android devices than there are people on the planet, (perhaps a slight exaggeration) devices powered by Google's operating system make up a paltry 12% of mobile devices used...
