Nintendo confirms it’s working on mobile ‘service’ apps

It's been an interesting week regarding Nintendo news and its plans for the mobile market. With the company expected to report its second straight year of profit loss, and its hardware sales tanking, pundits are hoping to see it enter the mobile space.

Earlier this week, a report from Japan's Nikkei claimed that Nintendo was working on 'mini games' for mobile devices. The company has since denied the rumor, but during a strategy briefing earlier today, it confirmed it is working on mobile apps...

Disney announces new ‘Star Wars: Assault Team’ game coming to iOS this spring

Disney announced yesterday that it's working on a new game called 'Star Wars: Assault Team' for iOS and Android, and it's set to be released later this year. Now I know you're thinking "great, another Star Wars game, but this one looks to set itself apart.

Disney describes the game on its Tumblr blog as "a new turn-based combat game for mobile devices with strategy and card-battle elements," where users will be collecting classic characters from the Rebel Alliance and more to defeat enemies across the galaxy...

Nintendo denies report of plans to release ‘mini games’ for mobile devices

Japanese business newspaper Nikkei published a report yesterday suggesting that Nintendo is working on a smartphone app as part of an effort to market its games to users outside of its ecosystem. The report also claimed that the company is working on 'mini games' in the same light.

But according to Nintendo, that's not true—at least the last half of it. In an official statement today, the game-maker debunked the Nikkei article, stating that it doesn't have any plans to offer 'mini' or 'demo' games on smartphone and tablet platforms, at any point in the immediate future...

Rumor: next-gen Apple TV has gaming functionality, TV tuner, built-in AirPort router

Piggy-backing on a report last week by iLounge which heard from sources that the next Apple TV set-top box will support wireless game controllers and possibly an app store for games, another reliable blogger has chimed in with additional tidbits.

Long story short, a much improved Apple TV hardware refresh is thought to include an 802.11ac wireless router functionality by way of AirPort Express integration. It should also come with a built-in TV tuner to control your existing cable boxes and TV stations and include gaming functionality.

Some hobby, eh?

Nintendo reportedly working on smartphone app to market its games

Last month, comments made by Nintendo of America's Reginald Fils-Aime during an interview suggested that the company is finally warming up to the idea of producing content for mobile devices. Nintendo is currently the only console-maker that doesn't have an iOS or Android presence.

Fils-Aime said that the gaming giant has been working on "little experiences" for the smartphone, but he didn't get into any details. Japanese business newspaper Nikkei looks to fill in the blanks though, with a new report claiming Nintendo is working on an app to market its console titles...

Logitech’s PowerShell MFi controller drops to $70 until February 1

Realizing rival accessory maker Stratus has shaved $20 off its 'Made for iPhone' (MFi) wireless iOS 7 controller dubbed SteelSeries, Logitech has decided to play along and bring its overpriced PowerShell down to $70. The Logitech accessory now undercuts Stratus by a cool $10 as the PowerShell is now $30 cheaper versus its original price of $99.

It's a limited time offer so hurry up because the sale ends February 1, 2014 (they should have made it permanent). So is this controller now a good value? Read on...

In Fear I Trust: this game is so scary you will leave the lights on

I guess I’ve recently discovered that horror games scare me… a lot. A few months ago, I reviewed Indigo Lake and had the same experience. There is something about playing a horror game with a first person point of view (POV) that just freaks me out.

In Fear I Trust is a horror game that puts you in the first person POV of a prisoner with no memory and no way out. It is a mix between a room escape (or, prison escape in this case) and a point-and-click mystery game. If you are like me, you ‘ll play this game with the lights on and the sound off…

Tomb Raider reboot hits the Mac App Store

Feral Interactive today released a Mac version of last year's Tomb Raider reboot for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is available exclusively on the Mac App Store starting today and will be coming to Steam on January 30.

A young Lara Croft gets shipwrecked on an uncharted island and... Well, you know the drill. You'll be scavenging the island's vital resources, upgrade Lara’s gear, improving her exploration, combat and survival skills and what not.

In terms of game mechanics, expect a lot of jumping and climbing through dense forests, mountains and WWII bunkers "to discover how an ordinary young woman became Lara Croft"...

Carnage racing game Carmageddon goes free for a day

Stainless Games unleashed Carmageddon on the App Store back in October 2012 and today it goes free as the App of the Day app. This classic carnage racing game has earned its notoriety way back in 1997, when the original PC release caused quite a commotion among the purists and censors due to its graphical violence.

The iOS version has been toned down a bit to placate Apple's censors, though you can still run over pedestrians who stay out on the streets at their peril. And watch out for the cops in their super-tough armored patrol vehicles...

Bardbarian review: crush bad guys with your shredding guitar licks

I love a good mash-up. Mix Slayer with DMX and you’ll win my heart. Mix “Shining” with a feel-good trailer and I’ll giggle. Mix role-playing games and castle defense and I’ll be glued to my iOS device for hours.

Bardbarian is a mash-up game that combines the fantasy of role-playing battles with the tactics of castle defense. Throw in some lowbrow humor and a sprinkle of metal music for good measure and you can see why it is so fun…

Candy Crush Saga creator trademarks ‘candy’, goes after App Store devs

Social games developer King, perhaps best-known for its wildly popular Candy Crush Saga match-three game (free in the App Store, currently #9 on the free apps chart), has filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) seeking to trademark the word 'candy'.

And guess what? King won the trademark last week and is now asking fellow developers to remove games with 'candy' in their name. The full story is right after the break...
