Apple TV picks up a new channel for Sports Illustrated’s 120 SPORTS network

As spotted by MacRumors, Apple TV has just gained a brand new channel with content from Sports Illustrated's 120 SPORTS network.

120 SPORTS provides on-demand and streaming coverage from major sports networks, including content from the likes of MLB, NBA, NHL, PGA Tour, NCAA Football, NCAA Basketball, NASCAR and leading college leagues.

It's is an over-the-air update that doesn't require a restart. If it's not available on your box yet, choose Software Update in Apple TV's Settings. The new channel arrives just a few weeks following the addition of the Tennis Channel Everywhere channel to the set-top box.

Apple adds Tennis Channel Everywhere to Apple TV

The Apple TV content march continues, as the company has added Tennis Channel Everywhere to the set-top box for tennis lovers.

Previously just an iOS app, the Tennis Channel Everywhere app on the Apple TV extends its functionality to the larger screen. The app streams live matches for $69.99 per year, or if you don't feel like paying, highlights from some of the recent matches are available to view for free.

Bowling Central teams up with your Apple TV for Wii-like bowling action

Apple TV-compatible AllCast media streaming app now available on iOS

Following a beta on Android that first launched more than a year ago, courtesy of CyanogenMod developer Koushik Dutta, the AllCast content streaming app is now available for the iPhone and iPad.

The software allows you to stream online or locally-stored content such as photos, music and videos to your Apple TV, Roku and a number of other set-top boxes and DLNA-compatible devices, including Amazon's Fire TV, Sony's PlayStation console, Microsoft's Xbox and more.

Moreover, the app supports popular online content sources such as Instagram for photos, as well as Dropbox, Google+ and Google Drive, and is compatible with smart TV brands from Samsung, Sony and Panasonic.

Many early HomeKit devices require Apple TV for remote Siri features

Folks looking to take advantage of the onslaught of HomeKit products being introduced at CES this year will need to make sure they have an Apple TV. The Verge is reporting that many of the just-announced HomeKit accessories require the set-top box for select features.

More specifically, the outlet says that new smart home devices from iHome, GridConnect, Chamberlain, Elgato and others require users to have a third-gen Apple TV (running software 7.0 or later) on their network in order to take advantage of Siri remote control capabilities.

Gene Munster just won’t give up on Apple TV set, says it’s now two years away

Famed Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is known for his incorrect predictions on Apple's long-awaited television set. He's previously guessed 2012, late-2012, and holiday 2013 as the incorrect launch dates for the new Apple product category. In 2014 he's remained completely silent on the subject, until his latest appearance at the Business Insider conference.

In an interview published on Wednesday, Munster said he expects the Apple television is now two years away and will be launched in 2016. He's mum on specific product features, but didn't mind providing expected sales figures.

Apple TV gains revamped YouTube app with ads, Dailymotion and other new channels

As first noted by Re/code, Apple's $99 streaming box is getting a flurry of new channels today, including a redesigned YouTube app that for the first time shows ads on the platform which cannot be skipped.

It brings Apple's device on par with other platforms that have been enjoying YouTube with personalized recommendations, predictive search and all the videos for quite some time now.

In addition to the refreshed YouTube appearance with improved functionality, the set-top box has gained a set of four new channels, including Dailymotion, a video-sharing website owned by French multinational telecommunications corporation Orange.

Apple TV seen losing ground to Roku and Google’s Chromecast

Apple's $99 Apple TV box is reportedly losing ground to rivals in the media streaming space, according to a new study by market research firm Parks Associates shared by CNET.

At a time when as much as ten percent of U.S. households with a broadband connection have bought a media-streaming device in the first nine months of this year, Apple's market share went down to seventeen percent.

As a result of increased competition, the Apple TV fell down to the number three slot, with Roku and Google's Chromecast holding the #1 and #2 slot, respectively.
