Tokyo court finds Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple’s ‘rubber banding’ patent

On Friday, a Tokyo court found a number of Samsung's legacy smartphone models to be guilty of infringing on one of Apple's patents. More specifically, it's the infamous 'rubber banding' patent, which Apple has used in a number of courtroom battles.

For those unfamiliar with the 'rubber banding' property, it covers the software action that triggers the bounce-back animation when a user reaches the end of a scrolling document. And the Japan court feels older Samsung handsets infringe upon it...

New photos of alleged iPhone 5S with dual LED flash surface

As the iPhone 5 nears the end of its 12-month life cycle, rumors regarding Apple's next-generation handset are beginning to pick up. It's believed that the phone, which is expected to be called the iPhone 5S, is already in production.

And when devices go into production, it becomes harder to control component leaks. That might explain how the folks who took these two photos got their hands on what appears to be a nearly complete (minus the display) iPhone 5S...

Photoful brings elements of iOS 7’s Photo app to iOS 6

Every time someone writes about the great new look or awesome features that we will see in iOS 7, I get all giddy just thinking about it. I chose not to download the beta because I am the kind of person who actually likes to wait until Christmas morning to open gifts. I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

Just the same, I’m really exited about some of the new features that are heading to my iPhone with iOS 7.  Some of the features I’m looking forward to the most are the changes to Apple’s native Photos app.

Thanks to Photoful, I don’t have to wait until the Fall to take advantage of some of them. This new photo app incorporates some of the “Moments” in iOS 7 features that turn your sea of photos into something more organized and easier to search through…

Safari Upload Enabler finally updated with support for iOS 6

Folks who have been around the jailbreak community for a while will likely remember a popular tweak called Safari Upload Enabler. Before Apple added the ability in Safari to upload photos and videos in iOS 6, it was one of the only ways you could natively upload files from within the mobile browser.

Well we have some good news today for all of you jailbreakers, Safari Upload Enabler has finally been updated with support for iOS 6. Developed by H. Samara and N. Bassen, the new version of the tweak is out in Cydia now with a number of improvements, including a new Dropbox API and more...

Why it took HBO GO so long to come to Apple TV

Yesterday morning, Apple announced that an update was available for its Apple TV devices. The new software, which was earmarked as version 5.3, featured a handful of content streaming apps including WatchESPN and HBO GO.

Users have been clamoring for HBO GO to land on Apple's ATV platform for quite some time, as its been available on iOS for years. So what took it so long? According to HBO's chief technology officer, it was building the app itself...

‘PostOffice’ forwards all iOS notifications to Google Glass

Adam Bell, the iOS developer behind jailbreak tweaks like Stride and the Facebook Chat Head enabling MessageBox, is back at it again. He just released PostOffice — a new jailbreak tweak that allows Google Glass users to forward all of their iOS notifications directly to Google Glass.

Unfortunately, I don't own Google Glass, so it's impossible for me to personally test out exactly how the tweak functions. At any rate, take a look inside for a screenshot of the tweak's settings.

Wi-Fi Alliance launches 802.11ac certification

The so-called Gigabit Wi-Fi, better known as 802.11ac, has yet to be officially ratified but that hasn't stopped Apple from implementing the technology on the refreshed MacBook Air lineup and the redesigned AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule base stations, which were both announced during the WWDC keynote earlier this month.

That said, it's fairly safe to assume that Apple will also roll out 802.11ac across the upcoming iPhone 5S, iPad 5, iPad mini 2 and a next-gen Mac Pro, Apple TV and MacBook. For what it's worth, Apple reportedly partnered with chip maker Broadcom to outfit all Macs with 802.11ac chips.

Apple is usually among the first companies - if not the first - to implement each new major revision to the Wi-Fi standard. And while this allows Apple's customers to live on the bleeding edge of technology, it also exposes early adopters to their fair share of teething issues...

Best Buy to relaunch iPhone 4/4S trade-in offer this week

All through this month, nationwide electronics chain Best Buy has been taking $50 off its iPhone 5 handsets. This means that if you were in the market for such a device, you could score a 16GB iPhone 5 for just $150, with contract.

And it's looking to sweeten the deal. The retailer says that it's going to be relaunching its iPhone trade-in offer this week that will allow customers to trade in their old iPhone 4 or 4S for a free 16GB iPhone 5 with a 2-year agreement...

How iOS 7 makes auto-correct better

I'd be lying if I said I've never been embarrassed by a text message I sent containing an accidentally auto-corrected word. I'm sure you've been there too. It can be embarrassing, or it can be hilarious, depending who's receiving the message and what's being said, but at the end of the day, it's something that could have been prevented should your iPhone auto-correct be a little smarter.

And smarter it appears to be in iOS 7! Christian touched on this earlier today with a post on how the keyboard features in iOS 7 have gotten smarter, but I'd like to focus a little more on auto-correct with a few real life examples and comparison points with iOS 6...

Instagram now does video

As expected, Facebook at a press conference today announced that Instagram, the popular photo-sharing service it snapped up earlier in the year, now lets you record, upload and share short video clips with your followers or the web at large.

An accompanying update to the Instagram mobile app with video capability has just been released, featuring a brand new camera icon. You can optionally soup up your recording with a bunch of cinematic filters made specifically for Instagram videos. When done, share your work on Instagram like you would do with photos and hope it goes viral...

IDC: iPhone 4’s triple-digit growth boosts Apple’s China share to 9%

More indications Apple's efforts offering flexible pricing are paying off. Sales of the iPhone 4 in China grew at a faster pace than the overall market during the first quarter, research firm IDC announced Thursday. Per data, the iPhone has a cool nine percent of the Chinese smartphone market, putting Apple in fifth place.

Demand for the iPhone 4 grew by 211 percent, outpacing the market's overall 117 percent growth rate. By comparison, Korean smartphone rival Samsung has nineteen percent of the smartphone market in China. However, the company has shifted from growing its share of the high-end market to simply hanging on to what it now has...
