Apple TV software updated to 6.0.1

Apple has posted a new version of its Apple TV software this afternoon, bringing the firmware to 6.0.1. The release follows a number of app updates this week, including those for its iLife and iWork suites.

On Tuesday, Apple added a new channel to its set-top box called iMovie Theater, which is a companion app for the latest versions of iMovie that enables clip-sharing. But as for today's Apple TV update...

Some Disney and Pixar movies go missing from iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud

Uh oh. Some users are noticing that Apple has pulled various Disney and Pixar titles from its iTunes Store and iTunes in the Cloud. While the missing movies were initially shrugged off as a glitch, it appears that the move is much more serious.

It looks like the problem has to do with a licensing agreement between Apple and Disney. And not only does it mean that users can't buy or rent the titles, but folks who previously purchased them are no longer seeing them in their Purchased tab...

Vine app update adds new ‘Time Travel’ and ‘Sessions’ features

It's been about 10 months since Twitter launched its video-sharing platform experiment known as Vine, and it's still going strong. The app recently crossed the 40 million user mark, and it's currently in the top 20 free apps in the App Store.

And today, it gets even better. Vine posted an update for its iOS client this morning, bringing about two huge new features: Time Travel and Sessions. The former is essentially a time-shift editing tool, and the latter is the ability to save drafts...

Slingbox gains AirPlay place-shifting, Blockbuster movies, plays nice with Mavericks

The Slingbox, a TV streaming media device made by Sling Media, has received a nice little firmware update earlier today bringing support for AirPlay, a technology from Apple that streams media from iOS devices and Macs to a TV set through the $99 Apple TV set-top box. It's a notable enhancement: with AirPlay, owners of Slingboxes can stream live television from their Slingbox-connected TV to any Apple TV-connected TV set.

In addition to AirPlay support, the firmware update brings on-demand high-definition movies from Blockbuster and support for Apple's just-released OS X Mavericks (a free upgrade on the Mac App Store). More on that in just a second...

$199 Anki Drive now available in Apple Stores

At the September double iPhone keynote, Apple's boss Tim Cook invited guys from Anki up on stage to show off their new innovative game-slash-accessory, Anki Drive, basically an iPhone-controlled system comprised of miniature self-driving cars that race around a vinyl race track.

The successful presentation wowed the audience and the robotics company said shortly after that Anki would launch later in October. And as of yesterday, the Anki Drive is available from the Apple Store for a cool $199...

Microsoft on the defensive: Apple’s free iWork productivity suite is ‘no big deal’

There's nothing like a good dogfight between two tech titans to get your blood flowing. After a hiatus from its sniping at Apple, Microsoft is back, calling the decision to offer iWork and iLife software free "no big deal". Sure Microsoft, whatever you say.

But Redmond didn't stop there. In a Wednesday blog post, the software giant's communication vice president paints Apple's move as desperate, before launching into a rally-round-the-flag sort of promo for the new Surface tablet.

All of which reminds me of the Hamlet quote about protesting too much...

Apple patents new iBooks gifting choice

Unlike other media Apple sells, such as music and video, you've not been able to gift e-books - until now (perhaps). As we head into the holiday season, the iPhone maker has filed for a patent on sending to friends the e-books you've already purchased through the iBookstore. The patent filing would enable you to select a passage in an e-book that reminds you of someone, then gift the book, complete with a personalize message...

Flash Player is finally sandboxed in Safari on Mavericks, says Adobe

Yours truly long stopped using the standalone Flash Player so you could imagine I'm fairly puzzled that folks to this date continue to rely on Adobe's plug-in. I know, if you're into Flash games/apps and other Flash-authored content, there's no escaping Adobe's multimedia run-time.

Among the reasons I keep Flash miles away from my Macs: the instability, resource hoginess and excessive proneness to malware and other types of vulnerabilities and malicious attacks.

With this week’s release of Safari in OS X Mavericks, the Flash Player will now be protected by a new operating system feature called App Sandbox, Adobe announced Thursday...

Icahn pushes Apple to buy back stock ASAP

If you run a multi-billion dollar corporation and your secretary tells you activist investor Carl Icahn is on line 2, the very thought of that should send chills up your spine. Icahn is known for his ominous "increase shareholder value" mantra and stops at nothing to put forward massive corporate stock buyback programs, even pushing for board and CEO changes if need be.

Yesterday, Icahn tweeted he "just sent a letter to Tim Cook" concerning Apple's buyback program. And now, the contents of the letter has been published on his newly launched website called the Shareholders' Square Table.

Should Tim Cook be worried? Read on...

Old iPads are hot: 81 percent of North American tablet traffic

On Tuesday, just a few hours ahead of Apple's iPad keynote, new evidence surfaced about how entrenched Apple's device is in the minds of tablet users. Although Apple's tablet has undergone a number of updates, the old iPad 2 remarkably still accounts for the vast majority of U.S. and Canadian web traffic.

That's the word from ad network Chitika, showing iPads are 81 percent of North American tablet-based online traffic. The next closest competitor is the Kindle Fire from Amazon, nipping at Apple's heels with 6.1 percent. This is the second report in as many days showing even the oldest iPads dominate all contenders...

EMPIRE review: a deck building game with strategy

Being that I am a bit of a board game geek, I’m always on the lookout for apps that are digital versions of tabletop adventures. Whether they are land grab games, resource management games, or deck building games, I’m all in when it comes to apps that have turn-based strategy planning and stats-based battles.

EMPIRE is a deck-building game that combines a bit of 4X (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) style empire creation. Construct your empire by gathering materials and destroy your enemies by building your deck to its maximum potential…

T-Mobile to sell 16GB iPads with no downpayment

Piggy-backing on Tuesday's unveiling of the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, the agile T-Mobile USA immediately tweeted out they'll be carrying cellular models with a free 200MB plan. Today, the Deutsche Telekom-owned carrier, the nation's fourth-largest, has shed more light on its iPad strategy.

Your key takeaway: there will be no downpayment for those in the market for a cellular iPad Air or Retina iPad mini variant. However, the no-downpayment bait applies only to the entry-level models with sixteen gigabytes of storage. The full breakdown of T-Mobile's UnCarrier offering is right below...
