RIM to Axe 2,000 Jobs as Part of Restructure

As part of work force restructuring, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion is set to axe 2,000 staff. In a press release today, the Canadian company cited rapid payroll growth over the last five years as the reason for the layoffs.

RIM's BlackBerry sales have been been on the slide of late, and analysts have been concerned about the company's performance already, and this round of layoffs will do little to stave off the vultures...

Verizon Getting Ready for iPhone 5 by Clearing Out iPhone 4 Inventory

We're all waiting for the next iPhone announcement, with the smart money on a release date of late August to late September, depending on which rumor you subscribe to. The latest information coming out of the Apple rumor mill points to the same release window, with news that Verizon is beginning to clear out inventory to make way for the new handset.

We're always skeptical about trusted tipsters, but the guys at Phone Arena seem to think this one is legit, and if it is, Verizon obviously knows something that we don't....

Apple Hiring Extra Employees This August for iPhone 5 Launch

Hot on the heels of reports that Apple Retail UK has been recruiting new staff for an unknown event in the next couple months, new claims have surfaced that Apple is undergoing a similar recruitment drive in the United States.

According to MacRumors, Apple has, in the past, turned to ex-employees to fill the gaps created by staff holidays, and it isn't unknown for them to be used during big product launches, too.  Now, one such ex-employee says they have been asked to do just that for what is believed to be the launch of the next iPhone...

More Info on iOS 5 Voice Recognition – Nuance Dictation

Fresh from the release of iOS 5's fourth beta came news that there are references to unannounced voice recognition technology. When we wrote about this new development yesterday, speculation was that a Siri Assistant-like feature would be coming to iOS.

Now it seems there may be more to this 'talking to your iPhone' thing than we first thought, with 9to5Mac finding yet more code, this time pointing to integrated Nuance Dictation.

The code, discovered in the latest iOS 5 SDK, would bring Android-like text dictation to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. That is, if it makes its way into a final release of the OS...

T-Mobile Disses the iPad 2 by Calling the G-Slate Faster

T-Mobile USA has declared an all-out war on the iPad 2, claiming that the "G-Slate" tablet is both faster and cheaper.

In a new tablet comparison page on the company's website, T-Mobile pits the hugely popular iPad 2 against the Android-powered Motorola Xoom, listing specifications and costs for both tablets. Unsurprisingly, the only tablet of the three that T-Mobile has on its network comes out on top, with the G-Slate receiving the most praise...

1 Billion Smartphone Sales a Year Expected by 2016

Smartphones are already growing to be more and more popular by the year, with marquee devices like Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S proving popular with buyers across the globe.

With smartphone sales between the 298 million and 321 million marks, depending on who you listen to, it's fair to say that the industry is on the up already. But, according to new research, it is believed that smartphones could hit the magic 1 billion sales mark as soon as 2016.

That's a lot of phones....

iPad Top Dog in Enterprise, Android Metaphorical Kitten

In a market that was once dominated by RIM and CrackBerry smartphones, Apple is fast becoming the provider of choice for businesses, according to a new report.

With RIM suffering somewhat of a downturn in sales, Apple's iPhone and iPad are filling the void, with Android currently a smaller player in the world of power ties and pinstripe suits. Apple's iPad is doing so well, in fact, that it made up 95% of tablet activations in the enterprise for the months of March through June of this year, with Android tablets making up just 3.1%...

Next iPod Touch to Come in White?

Photos leaked to 9to5Mac point to Apple bringing a spot of white to its next gen iPod touch, with the 5th generation of the popular 'iPhone-lite' set to receive the same white glass as the iconic iPhone 4.

The photos, which 9to5Mac says are not yet confirmed to be either legit or, well, not so legit, show what appears to be a white iPod touch's front screen.

The part appears to be similar in design to the current 4th generation model of the iPod touch, lending credence to rumors that the next incarnation of the device will sport a design not too dissimilar from its current form....

Android Tablets Gaining on iPad’s Market Share Slowly But Surely

In a market that is growing at an alarming rate, tablet demand is at an all-time high, with Apple's iOS and Google's Android tablet operating systems proving the two main competitors in the space, according to new research.

A report by Strategy Analytics claims that while Apple's iPad is still the number one tablet in town, the iPad saw its market share drop from a staggering 94% to a still impressive 61% for the 2nd quarter, year over year.

Before you start to worry about Apple's sales numbers, it's worth noting that the company still shipped a whopping 9.3 million iPads during that time period...

Crispin Porter and Bogusky have discovered an interesting new ad scheme, with Vitamin Water signage becoming a new vehicle for charging stations in select cities across the US.

Boston, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles are now home to mobile phone charging stations, right built into Vitamin Water ads at bus stops. What a convenient way to charge your dead iPhone or iPad...

Sky TV Streaming App Now in the App Store

Sky TV, the UK's largest satellite television provider, has finally seen its new Sky Go app approved by Apple.

Originally slated for release way back on the 6th of July, Sky Go has seen a delay similar to that of the Google+ app, which leads us to wonder if Apple's team of reviewers have been busy accepting apps for the Mac App Store, with OS X Lion finally here.

Available for free on the App Store, Sky Go offers streaming Sky television to iPads, iPod touches and iPhones while out and about, with a maximum of two devices registered at a time...
