iPod touch 6th generation receives the teardown treatment

The iPod touch 6th generation may have taken forever to finally arrive, but it took almost no time for the boys and girls over at iFixit to give it a proper teardown.

As we noted in yesterday's full review of the 6th-gen iPod touch, this device is a marked improvement over the previous generation, and features the same powerful A8 processor as the iPhone 6, and double the RAM of the 5th-gen iPod touch. But that's not all that's new in this refresh. Be sure to check out iFixit's teardown for a full breakdown of all of the music player's components.

How to jailbreak the iPod touch 6th generation

One of the very first things that I tried when I got the iPod touch 6th generation (full review) was to jailbreak. To my surprise, both the PP jailbreak for Mac and the Windows-only TaiG jailbreak for iOS 8.4 worked out of the box. This surprised me because in times past, the tools used to perform the jailbreak needed to be updated to support new devices.

With the iPod touch 6th generation, this is not so; you can jailbreak immediately. In this post, I'll show you how easy it is to jailbreak your iPod touch 6 using the latest version of TaiG.

Download the new iPod touch 6th generation wallpapers

Ever since we posted our review of the 6th generation iPod touch, people have been asking me about the three new wallpapers that come included with the device. The new wallpapers are color-specific wallpaper for the new Gold, Blue, and Pink iPod touch 6th-gen units. In this post, we provide you with a link to download all three of the new wallpapers.

TaiG 2.4.3 beta released to jailbreak iOS 8.4

The folks at TaiG have released yet another beta for the iOS 8.4 jailbreak tool on Windows. Labeled version 2.4.3 beta, this update is there to optimize the jailbreak process.

As TaiG has been doing for some time now, they are suggesting that jailbreakers stick to the public versions of the TaiG tool, and leave the beta versions to testers. In this post, you'll find the download links for both the publicly available version of TaiG and the beta version.

iPod touch 6th generation review

I debated over it for a while, but I just couldn't resist ordering a brand new 6th generation iPod touch after looking at the specs of the device. The new iPod touch, despite not changing much from a use-case standpoint, is quite the compelling device.

When you consider how underpowered the previous generation iPod touch was, this really is a major upgrade. You're essentially getting an iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus level 64-bit A8 system on a chip (SoC) with its M8 motion coprocessor, along with double the RAM at 1GB.

The SoC and RAM alone would be enough to blow the previous iPod touch, which is downright painful to use on iOS 8, out of the water, but Apple has included significant improvements to the iSight Camera—bumped up from 5 megapixels to 8 megapixels—there's faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi, an upgrade to Bluetooth 4.1, a 128GB storage capacity option, and more.

Make no mistake, the iPod touch 6th generation is more powerful than some of the lower tier phones hitting the market today. If you're serious about gaming, photos, and video, but don't need the capabilities of a phone, then the iPod touch 6th generation might be considered a bargain.

Watch our full video review for the unboxing, benchmarks, comparisons to the 5th-gen iPod touch and much more.

You can jailbreak the iPod touch 6th generation right now

The iPod touch 6th generation can be jailbroken out of the box, because it comes with iOS 8.4, and the PP iOS 8.4 jailbreak tool for Mac works with the new iPods.

In fact, I just jailbroke my device no less than 5 minutes ago, and it worked without a hitch. If you guys have kept up with me, you know how much I absolutely loathed using my 5th-gen touch due to its pedestrian speed.

Seeing that the new iPod touch packs much more power than the device it replaces, I'd say this is a good candidate for a jailbroken device, or at the very least, it might become my go-to test device.

Jailbreak tip: spoof your location in Snapchat to use any geofilter

Phantom for Snapchat is a popular jailbreak tweak that allows you to supercharge Snapchat with all sorts of bolt on features. It also has the ability to spoof your location.

Snapchat uses your location to present you with custom geofilters, which are basically stickers that you can place on your Snaps that reflect your current location. So, for example, you couldn't normally add a Paris filter to your Snaps unless you were actually in Paris.

With Phantom's location spoofing option, it's possible to snag filters for any location that you desire around the world. It's super-easy to use as well. We'll show you how to spoof your location in Snapchat to add custom filters in our video tutorial.

Watchdog adds true app backgrounding to jailbroken iOS devices

Back in the day, there was a jailbreak tweak called Backgrounder, which brought true app backgrounding to users before iOS even had native multitasking. That tweak no longer works for the latest firmware, but a new tweak called Watchdog aims to make true app backgrounding available today on iOS 8.

Watchdog is a beta tweak that's available via developer Allan Kerr's third-party repo. In this post, I'll show you how you can get Watchdog on your jailbroken device, and share a few use case scenarios.

At last, the official Twitter app gains support for the native Share Sheet in iOS 8

As most of you guys know by now, I've been a pretty big proponent of the official Twitter app for quite some time. As a former Tweetbot user, I find the official Twitter app to be more engaging.

But there are still a couple of lingering issues with the official Twitter app that I despise. One of them is the lack of a quick way to access my Twitter lists. The other, is an issue that Twitter just remedied today.

As of today, and as first spotted by MacStories, users can now share content from the stock Twitter app using the native iOS 8 share sheet. While not as seamless as it could be, it's still a large step in the right direction for Twitter on the iPhone.
