How to reset your Instagram content preferences to see less filth

Use these quick tips to reset the suggested reels and posts you see on your Instagram timeline and start fresh with different content.

Want a fresh start on Instagram

Instagram uses a ton of factors to target and serve you reels, posts, ads, and other content that it thinks you’ll find engaging. One of the most important parameters is your watch history.

For instance, even if you watch just a couple of videos of, say, a person in skimpy clothes dancing, you may soon find that your suggestions are full of similar videos.

Or if you hand your phone to someone else, like a teenager, and they view content of their choice, your future recommendations may be based on that and totally irrelevant to you.

If you don’t want to see those suggested content, you can reset your preferences and also take a few other steps to finetune your Instagram experience.

Reset your Instagram content preferences

1) Open the Instagram app, go to your profile screen, and tap the hamburger menu icon at the top.

2) Tap Content preferences.

3) Tap Reset suggested content and then hit Next.

4) You can now choose to review who you follow and your ad topics or skip this for now. Then, tap Reset Suggested Content and confirm.

After a few seconds, you’ll see the “Your suggested content has been reset” message on the screen.

Tweak your content preferences settings

When resetting your suggested content in the above steps, you’ll notice additional options that let you decide if you prefer sensitive or political content.

You can also add words and phrases to the exclude list. And then suggested posts with those words/phrases in hashtags and captions won’t be shown to you.

Mark a photo or video as ‘interested’ or ‘not interested’

When you come across a reel or suggested post on Instagram that you don’t like, simply tap the Not Interested button. Conversely, if you like something and would want to see more of it, tap the Interested button instead. You’ll usually see these after resetting content preferences (first tip above).

Even if you don’t see these clear buttons, you can tap the three dots icon and choose Not Interested or Interested. Over time, marking content as interesting or not will fine-tune your Instagram user experience.

Decide who you follow

Instagram also takes your following list into account to show suggested content. For instance, if you follow Tesla, Ford, Toyota, and other such brand accounts, Instagram may frequently suggest car-related reels and posts. Go through your following list every few months or so and unfollow accounts that no longer seem relevant to you.

These simple tips should help reduce filth and useless content on Instagram and replace your feed with more of what you like.
