How to add divider lines in notes on iOS and macOS 27

In this brief tutorial, we’ll show you how to add divider lines to a note on iPhone, iPad, and Mac to clearly separate text blocks, drawings, and media for a cleaner, organized, and visually polished layout.

iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate added a small but thoughtful addition to the Notes app. It lets you add a thin horizontal line to divide blocks of text, drawings, file attachments, or whatever else you add to your note, like a checklist or table.

Before this update, I often found myself adding a line by tapping the dash (-) key dozens of times. And then I’d copy and paste that line in another spot if needed. Thankfully, all these time-consuming workarounds are now a thing of the past.

Mac

  1. Open the macOS 27 Notes app and go into an existing note or create a new one.
  2. Click where you want to place the insertion point. If it’s between a sentence, the divider line will break it and move the text under it.
  3. Press the Command + L keys or click Edit > Insert Divider Line from the top menu bar.

As of now, you can’t change the color, thickness, or style of the divider line. It’s a simple black horizontal line that’s about 2px wide.

iOS

If you’re using a physical keyboard with your iPhone or iPad, you can press the Command + L keys to add the divider.

Or, follow these steps if you don’t have a keyboard attached:

  1. Open the Notes app and go inside a note
  2. Tap at the desired spot in the note to place the insertion point.
  3. Then, tap the right arrow icon (>) in the thin menu strip.
  4. Select Insert Divider Line to place a horizontal divider line to demarcate your note.

Once you have an area divided by a line divider, the drawing you make or files you attach will stay confined under it.

In case you no longer need the line, delete it using the Delete key (like any other text) or undo it using Command + Z.

Note: The Notes app also has a Lines & Grids section, but that’s for the page background.
