  • The Unicode Consortium is considering new emoticons for our emoji keyboards.
  • The Emoji 15.0 draft list includes such candidate emoticons as a pink heart, a shaking face, a grey heart, a donkey, a jellyfish, a hair pick and a Khanda.
  • Once approved later this fall, Apple should add bring these and other new emoticons to the iPhone and its other platforms in early 2023.

31 new emoji that could come to the iPhone in 2023

Emojipedia has created a nice illustration showcasing the 31 new emoticons that the Unicode Consortium is considering for the upcoming Emoji 15 update. They include a shaking face, two pushing hands, a plain pink heart, a light blue heart, a grey heart, a donkey, a moose, a jellyfish, a black bird, maracas, a hair pick, a flute, ginger, a goose, a wing, a folding hand fan, a pea pod, a hyacinth and a Khanda (the symbol of the Sikh faith). When will Emoji 15.0 hit the iPhone?

As is always the case, proposed designs are not set in stone. Platform operators such as Apple and Google are free to tweak emoticon designs to suit their own design language, which they regularly do. Apple has yet to confirm any details concerning the new iPhone emoji that may come bundled with iOS 16.

It’s unclear if the Emoji 15 update will be part of iOS 16. Historically, Apple brought new emoji via subsequent iOS releases. For example, the current emoji set previewed in the summer of 2021 didn’t hit the iPhone when iOS 15.0 launched in September. Instead, it arrived six months later with iOS 15.4 in March 2022.

When is World Emoji Day?

Currently, the aforementioned emoticons are in consideration so some of the proposals may not make the cut. But if history is any indication, this is unlikely to happen (the vast majority of proposed emoticons got approved in the past). The 31 proposed emoticons for the Emoji 15.0 update will go up for approval in September.

Happy World Emoji Day on July 17, everyone!
