In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know about your WhatsApp username and provide instructions on how to change it on both iPhone and Android devices.
When you download and set up WhatsApp for the first time, you’re asked to enter a name. Some people also consider this the username, even though, technically, it’s just the display name.
Your WhatsApp name is visible to people you message who don’t have your phone number saved in their contacts. If people have your mobile number saved, they will see the name they have saved your number with and not your username.
I have seen many people using their email address, name without spaces, or emoji as their WhatsApp name, even though they should just use their actual name. So, whether you have an incorrect username or just want to change it, you have the option to do that.
Change your WhatsApp username on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap You in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap your current profile name from the top.
- Tap Name.
- Replace your current display name with another you want to use, then tap Save to save your new name.
Change your WhatsApp name from an Android phone
- Launch WhatsApp on your phone, then tap the three dots menu button in the top right, followed by Settings.
- Tap your current name from the top.
- Tap the Name field, type the new name, and tap Save.
Your profile will now be updated with the new name, and anyone who doesn’t have your number stored on their phone will see that name. You can change your name as many times as you like on WhatsApp, since the app relies on your phone number to sign in and communicate.
