Apple’s Christmas surprise may be a new Apple TV

Back in November, a leaker suggested Apple had one more surprise in store for 2020 — a “Christmas surprise”. And now that same leaker may have given us an answer before it happens.

Serial leaker “L0vetodream” took to Twitter recently to drop yet another cryptic tweet. The Twitter user typically name drops at least one device, at least in one fashion or another, and this one’s no different. This time around it’s the Apple TV, and “L0vetodream” suggests that this will be the device Apple launches before the end of 2020. Maybe.

Here’s the tweet:

Which translates to: “Maybe Cook himself didn’t know that Apple would release a new Apple TV this year”. With plenty of emoji for good measure.

Apple last updated the Apple TV with the fifth-generation Apple TV 4K, which the company launched in 2017. That’s quite a while! Since then, Apple has released several different versions of its A-series chip, and it’s about time to upgrade the set-top box to better handle things like Apple Arcade.

Nothing’s guaranteed quite yet. However, there was a report last week that told us Apple is going to launch a new piece of hardware on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. That’s tomorrow, just in case you’re having a case of the Mondays. It could very well be a new Apple TV, which would certainly fall under the “just needs a press release” for a launch.

In any event, we don’t have long to wait. It might not be an Apple TV after all, but rather the oft-rumored AirPods Pro or AirTags. Or maybe something else entirely. Here’s to finding out!
