Google Maps for Apple Watch is available again

Back in August, Google confirmed that it was going to refresh the Google Maps app for Apple Watch. Unfortunately, at the time, it didn’t have a specific launch date to give us.

Now, almost exactly a month later, the refreshed app for the smartwatch is now available. Now, folks who have downloaded the latest update for Google Maps say Apple Watch support is live as well. And, indeed, the official landing page for the app shows Apple Watch support.

Google pulled support for the Apple Watch for Google Maps years ago. So, for folks who prefer Google’s mapping and navigation service, its return will probably be welcomed.

Unfortunately, it’s not as full-featured as some might expect. The Google Maps app for the Apple Watch still relies on the iPhone. Which means you’ll need to input your navigation or directions on the smartphone to see them on your smartwatch. You can see saved destinations on the wearable as well.

The Apple Watch supports a dedicated complication for Google Maps, and it supports turn-by-turn navigation as well.

Google Maps is free, and it’s available to download now.
