Best Buy is offering new subscribers four months of free Apple News+ [Update: Verizon offering its own deal]

Apple News+ typically costs $9.99 per month, and, for that, customers get a lot of different content from magazines and news publications.

Update: If Best Buy’s promotion doesn’t sound good to you, how about one through Verizon instead? The Big Red wireless carrier is currently offering six months of free Apple News+ service, but there’s a pretty significant extra step to the process compared to Best Buy: you need to buy an iPad, an iPad Air, iPad mini, or iPad Pro with cellular connectivity and connect it to a data plan to be eligible for the promo.

If you buy one of the iPad models offered by Verizon and activate it, you’ll get a code to activate the six months of Apple News+. And, as is the case with these promotions, if you don’t cancel before the end of that six months you’ll see Apple News+ auto-renew for the standard $9.99 per month.

However, unlike Apple Music, or even Apple Arcade, Apple News+ hasn’t seen a lot of attention from customers since its launch in 2019. Perhaps in an effort to turn things around, Apple and Best Buy are teaming up to offer a pretty slick deal: four months of free Apple News+ for new customers. The best part of this deal is that you don’t actually have to purchase anything else –not even a new Apple-branded product– to get the deal.

You can head over to Best Buy right now and get your four months of Apple News+ at no cost to you — as long as you’re a new subscriber. Once you’ve placed your order, you’ll get an email from the retailer on how to access your new digital subscription.

It’s worth pointing out that MacRumors has discovered that while new customers will get four months of Apple News+ with this deal, if you previously had Apple News+ and cancelled your subscription, you can still take advantage of this promotion. You’ll just get three months of service access instead of four.

This promotion is available only in the United States, so if you’re outside the U.S. you’re out of luck, unfortunately. And, of course, after the free trial period ends the subscription service will auto-renew, So if you don’t want to get charged $9.99, you’ll want to cancel before the trial period ends.

If you do subscribe, you’ll get access from a variety of magazines, including Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, National Geographic, and others. As far as news publications are concerned, there are stories from The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times.

In related news, before the end of June of this year, The New York Times ended its partnership with Apple and stopped publishing stories to Apple News. Not that that matters for Apple News+ one way or another, because the NYT was never a partner for that paid subscription service.
