The Apple TV+ reboot of Steven Spielberg’s anthology series “Amazing Stories” launches

From executive producers Steven Spielberg, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, Apple’s reimagining of the classic sci-fi anthology television series “Amazing Stories” has made its Apple TV+ debut Friday, as expected, with the first episode now available for streaming.

Running on NBC in the US from September 29, 1985 to April 10, 1987, the original series enjoyed something of a cult-like following. Fast forward to 2020 and each episode of the reboot promises to transport everyday characters into worlds of wonder, possibility and imagination. Aside from casting Edward Fitzgerald Burns for the lead role, one of the episodes will feature Robert Forster’s last acting performance before his death last October.

Apple’s blurb for the “Amazing Stories” reboot:

A reimagining of the original anthology series by Steven Spielberg, each episode of ‘Amazing Stories’ will transport the audience to worlds of wonder through the lens of today’s most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers.

Only the first episode of the five-episode season was available on Apple TV+, with subsequent ones arriving weekly thereafter every Friday. The first episode deals with a portal discovered in the storm cellar of a house that can take anyone who enters it back to the year 1919.

The official trailer which I’ve embedded further ahead contains scenes from other episodes.

The five episodes are titled “The Rift,” “Signs of Life”, “Dynoman and the Volt”, “The Heat” and “The Cellar”. The reboot is produced by Universal Television and Spielberg’s Amblin Television.

Matt Cherniss, Apple’s head of Development, in January 2020:

‘Amazing Stories’ is a beloved show that has captured our imaginations and we couldn’t be more excited to share its next thrilling iteration with a global audience of all ages on Apple TV+.
