Disney+ has surpassed 28 million subscribers already

If you’ll recall, Disney+ — Disney‘s offer in the “streaming wars” — launched in late 2019, right around the time Apple’s own Apple TV+ effort arrived.

And while many analysts expected Disney’s streaming option to reach around 20 million subscribers by the end of 2020, the company has blown past that number just a few months after launch. The Verge has the report today, detailing how Disney+ has surpassed 28 million subscribers so far. It’s got over 28.6 million, according to Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, who revealed the numbers on Disney’s quarterly earnings call.

Compared to Netflix, Disney hasn’t quite caught up. Netflix as 61 million subscribers in the United States. Meanwhile, Disney+ has surpassed HBO Now’s subscriber count. But what about Apple TV+? Well, we don’t know because Apple hasn’t made any similar announcements.

This all comes in light of a recent analyst report that a lot of potential Apple TV+ customers who could have signed up for the one year free promotion of the streaming service opted not to sign up. Which doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s accurate by any means, but all we have is conjecture at this point because Apple won’t break down subscriber numbers just yet. Or ever.

It is worth noting that a report back in January of this year suggested Apple TV+’s subscriber count could be around 33 million. That would certainly be marked as a success for Apple.

Basically, this is great news for Disney and Disney+. For whatever reason there was a lot of speculation about the streaming service’s viability in a crowded market, but considering Disney has access to a ridiculous laundry list of back catalog content, plus new original shows like The Mandalorian set in the Star Wars universe and things like WandaVision and Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe coming down the pipe, there seems like plenty of reasons to subscribe.

Of course, it all comes down to the individual and what’s worth it to them. Based on Iger’s confirmation today, millions of people think Disney+ is worth it.
