The Morning Show has been billed as Apple TV+‘s most prominent original series ever since the show was first announced. And now it’s earned itself its first major award.
The 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards was hosted on Sunday, January 12, and many of the expected winners took home trophies. That includes Joaquin Phoenix for his performance as Arthur in Joker for Best Actor, and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood for Best Picture. But that’s for film. We need to shift to TV to see Apple’s big win of the night.
The Critics’ Choice Awards officially gave the “Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series” to Billy Crudup of The Morning Show. Crudup plays Cory Ellison, one of the many individuals trying to steer the popular morning show out of rough waters after one of its prestigious anchors is removed from the show following allegations of sexual misconduct.

This is big news for Apple and Apple TV+ — and for Crudup, if he cares about such things. For the company, it’s the first major win of an award like this, and The Morning Show is basically brand new, having only launched to the public in November. Of course, Crudup was not the only one to get nominated from the dramatic series, though.
Both Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston were nominated for Best Actress by the Golden Globes in 2019. Crudup, along with Steve Carell, Aniston, and Witherspoon were all nominated for various Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, too.
Only Crudup has brought home the trophy from the Critics’ Choice Awards, though.
It’s not a secret that The Morning Show — along with the other original series that launched Apple TV+ in late 2019 — was panned by critics for the first three episodes. However, as the series went on many who doubted the show started to come around. The Morning Show, along with For All Mankind and See, all had promising first season endings.
Meanwhile, Dickinson, starring Hailee Steinfeld, was pretty well received right out of the gate and also finished strong enough.
As for Crudup, he absolutely deserves the award. And he should’ve won it from the SAG, too. The actor’s portrayal as Ellison was one of the stand-out elements of the series.
