Typing is one of the skills that everyone needs. Whether you only use it for composing emails occasionally or writing several articles per day, we all need to know how to type.
The better you are at typing, the faster you can get things done, and the more accurate your output will be. So for adults as well as children, to brush up on skills or learn the basics, here are the best free typing apps for your Mac.
Free typing apps for Mac
Typing apps for adults
These typing apps are more for adults because they focus on the lessons rather than colors and themes. But if you have older kids, you can both practice your skills.
Typist offers several lessons and drills to teach you to type, increase your speed and accuracy, and practice again and again.
Start by selecting a standard course, review, or drill. Each offers several lessons within the exercise, from learning key locations to typing full sentences.
With each exercise, you’ll see a description of the lesson. When you finish, view your keystrokes per minute, typing speed, and error ratio. This is a great way to better yourself and know where you need to concentrate.
Keyboard Virtuoso Light
Keyboard Virtuoso Light teaches you typing through repetition, but that’s the best way to learn or practice typing.
You can view the correct fingers to use and keys to press with a colorful display. See your average speed, average rhythm, type of characters, number of errors, and elapsed time with a total letter score.
Keyboard Virtuoso Light offers 20 warm-up exercises and ten lessons (with drills inside each) for free. The full version of Keyboard Virtuoso includes 300 lessons for $3.99.
Type to Learn
This app’s approach is simple – you paste any paragraph > then start typing > the app will highlight if you type correctly or not.
Once you get Type to Learn, open it and paste any text you want. For example, you can copy this iDB article and put it there. Or, better, you can copy text from a useful document or something informative and paste it there. If you don’t want to enter any paragraph, click the dice icon, and the app will take care of it.
Next, start typing what you see. As you type, the words you enter correctly will be highlighted in blue and the incorrect ones in red (which you can go back and fix).
The app also shows your accuracy percentage and the words per minute readings on the top.
Typing apps for kids
While the following free Mac typing apps are geared towards children using fun themes, colors, and characters, adults can benefit from them too!
Typing Fingers LT
Follow Dennis as he shows you how to sit correctly and position your body and hands. Then start the learning! You’ll see a colorful onscreen keyboard showing key locations with written and narrated descriptions as you move along.
Dennis guides you along each lesson, and when you finish, you can take the test to try out your new skills. Do well, and you’ll unlock the next lesson.
Typing Fingers LT is a fun app for kids to learn how to type with colorful animations and a game-like experience. It’s also an entertaining way for adults to enhance their own typing skills.
Animal Typing – Lite
Animal Typing is a cool typing app for kids. With its theme, you’ll see how fast you’re typing by the kind of animal you see. Go from a snail to a cheetah with lessons and practice. After each lesson, you can view speed and accuracy and earn stars for how well you’re doing.
You can choose whether or not to display the onscreen keyboard, use Qwerty, Qwertz, or Dvorak layouts, turn the sound on or off, and use the app in full-screen mode.
Animal Typing – Lite is a cute typing tool that you’re little beginning typists will love.
The Vehicles Typing
If your little one would rather head out on the highway than to the jungle, check out The Vehicles Typing on Mac. As you drive down the road, you’ll pop the balloons with the letters on the keyboard. How fast can you go? At the end of the lesson, when time is up, you’ll see your speed and accuracy.
It includes basic home row and upper stage letters for free. If your child (or you!) enjoys the app, you can purchase the full version, which gives you the rest of the keys, characters, and sentences for a fun-filled typing practice.
The Vehicles Typing is an excellent way to improve typing skills with a colorful revved up theme and animations.
With these free typing apps for Mac, both adults and children can learn or improve their keyboarding skills. Hopefully, one of them is just what you’ve been looking for, but if you have a favorite you’d like to recommend, let us know in the comments below!
