Among all the widgets that can be activated via your iPhone or iPad’s Today page, perhaps one of my favorites is Apple’s native Weather widget. On one hand, it’s particularly concise and can be expanded to show hourly forecast information; but at the same time, it’s particularly bland, especially when compared to decked out alternatives such as Yahoo! Weather.
Given the circumstances afoot, we’re particularly excited to show you a newly released jailbreak tweak called AnimatedWeatherWidget by iOS developer Cole Cabral. Just as the name implies, this tweak updates the background of your iOS device’s native Weather widget to display the same animated background that you’d typically observe in the Weather app itself.
In the screenshot examples above, you’ll notice that AnimatedWeatherWidget plays nicely with both the collapsed and expanded Weather widget views. Moreover, the widget displays the starry background because it’s currently nighttime at the time of this weather reading – this would change throughout the day to depict accurate weather conditions outside.
For best results, we recommend changing the Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Weather option to “Always” so that the widget can always fetch real-time weather updates and a background to go with it.
Once installed, AnimatedWeatherWidget doesn’t come with any options to configure. Instead, merely installing the tweak and rebooting your device afterward results in the gorgeous Weather widget you see above. To disable it, you would need to uninstall the tweak via your preferred package manager.
It’s worth noting that AnimatedWeatherWidget will work right out of the box on the unc0ver jailbreak, but Chimera and Electra users will need to manually install the plutil .deb file because, according to the developer, the Sileo package manager purportedly blocks Sam Bingner’s repository due to conflicts.
Will you be installing AnimatedWeatherWidget, or do you prefer the bland appearance? Let us know in the comments section below.
