The new iPhone is just around the corner. With even a Pro version supposedly coming this year, it’s clear that the iPhone will be one of the best smartphones of 2019. It’s also clear that’s going to be one of the most expensive ones as well. And not all of us can afford it. Certainly, I can’t. Not if I want to buy other things like food.
Maybe you’re like me, and you don’t want to spend that much money on the latest model. Instead, you’re looking for an older, cheaper model. However, this brings up the question: What’s the oldest iPhone you should buy? If you’re asking yourself the same question, then you came to the right place. We’ll take a look at older iPhone models to determine which is the best based on their price and iOS support.
iPhone 6s ($199.99) and 6s Plus ($299.99)
The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were released in 2015. Apple first introduced the 3D Touch feature with these models. The company also fixed the bending issues the iPhone 6 had. These are the cheapest iPhones on the list and they’re also the oldest. That doesn’t mean they’re bad. In fact, there are a couple of good things about these iPhones.
First, they are the last models to have a headphone jack. That’s a rare feature nowadays, so that’s a big plus if you’re looking to use old headphones. Second, this is the oldest iPhone that will support iOS 13. So, if you’re looking for an iPhone that has the latest Operating System and has a headphone jack, this is a good choice for you.
However, this phone won’t get many updates in the future, so if you want an iPhone that lasts a couple more years, this is probably not the best option.
iPhone 7 ($299.99) and 7 Plus ($399.99)
The iPhone 7 was released in 2016, and it brought a lot of new things to the table. To mention a few, this is the first iPhone to ditch the headphone jack. Also, the iPhone 7 was the first iPhone that was water and dust resistant. For the first time, Apple decided to drop its 16 GB version and made the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus start at 32 GB of storage. It was also the first iPhone to ditch the physical Home button in favor of a software-simulated one. Lastly, the iPhone 7 Plus was the first one to have a dual camera.
It’s been 3 years since the release of these models. This means that Apple will support this iPhone with future updates for at least a couple more years. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus set the bar, not only for future iPhone models but for its competition at the time.
iPhone 8 ($599) and 8 Plus ($699)
Apple decided to skip the “S” version of the iPhone 7, and decided to go straight to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. This iPhone brought a better camera, introduced wireless charging and the True Tone display for users to have a better viewing experience.
After only 2 years after their release, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are still one of the best options to buy. Being compared to the iPhone X in terms of features and capacity, these models are still one of the best versions to buy.
Conclusion: Which one should I buy?
While in the end, the choice is yours to make, this is my humble opinion for you.
You should get the iPhone 6s if you’re looking for a second device, a present for your children or you want to have an iPod Touch with a cellular connection. It’s a great phone to listen to music and play not very demanding games. However, you need to remember that this iPhone is soon to be outdated. Especially with iOS 13 being probably the last software update the iPhone 6s will support.
What I don’t recommend, is the iPhone 6s Plus. With that price, you can easily get an iPhone 7. This model showed us the future for iPhone devices. It has everything you could ask for in an iPhone for the price. If you’re looking for a main iPhone device at a decent price range, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are the best options.
Not having a headphone jack was a big deal back in the day. Nowadays, however, it’s not that big of a problem. There are a ton of wireless earbuds, even if you don’t want to get the Apple Airpods. Plus, it seems like every company is slowly transitioning to wireless, so why not start getting used to it.
However, if you have a bigger budget, you can opt for the iPhone 8. This is one of the newest models. It has everything that made the iPhone 7 great, and a bunch of new features. If you have the money, the iPhone 8 is the way to go.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t go for the iPhone 8 Plus. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great iPhone. But, for the price, I would suggest that you wait a couple of months until the iPhone X lowers its price.
Actually, it’s more than likely that every iPhone will drop its price in the next few months, so waiting is a great option before as well.
