You can now install Sileo on your non-jailbroken iPhone or iPad as a simple repository browser

Those familiar with jailbreaking have undoubtedly heard about Sileo, a third-party package manager endorsed by the Electra Team that aims to compete with Cydia for market share; but what if we told you that you didn’t need to have a jailbroken handset to give Sileo a try?

Indeed, in an unforeseen turn of events, the Sileo Team released a public .ipa file on Saturday that can be side-loaded onto non-jailbroken handsets via Cydia Impactor or installed directly with online services such as Ignition.

Obviously, Sileo won’t be permitted to install packages or make changes on a non-jailbroken handset, but it can still be used for the following purposes:

  • Browse jailbreak repositories for packages and information
  • Receive push notifications about critical package updates
  • Read news updates about the Sileo package manager
  • Test out the Sileo app’s user interface as the beta preview progresses

As you might come to expect, there are a few asterisks. Citing the Sileo Team, users of the non-jailbroken version of Sileo should be aware of the following:

  • You can’t install packages (jailbreak tweaks, themes, etc.)
  • The app must not be closed from the App Switcher if you wish to receive push notifications
  • Background app refresh is required for background updates and push notifications
  • The non-jailbroken version of Sileo can be installed alongside the jailbroken version on a pwned handset (although redundant)
  • Sileo only works on iOS 11 and iOS 12

In addition to releasing a new non-jailbroken edition of Sileo, the Sileo Team released two minor updates to the package manager – 0.8b1 and 0.8b2.

The changes for each version are as follows:

Sileo 0.8b1

– Fixes some minor UI issues on iOS 12

Sileo 0.8b2

– Fixes a UI glitch when viewing the app in portrait mode on an iPad

– Repositories added to the non-jailbroken Sileo app are now saved

If you’re jailbroken with Electra, then you can find and install the latest version of the Sileo beta preview from the default Electra repository. Those who aren’t jailbroken will find the side-loadable .ipa files here.
