Apple posted an ad to its official YouTube channel yesterday highlighting a new Portrait Lighting shooting mode on iPhone 8 Plus. Portrait Lighting simulates professional studio lighting with a shallow depth-of-field effect in five different lighting styles.

Here’s the ad.

Song: “This Strange Effect” by The Shacks

“Portrait Lighting on iPhone 8 Plus lets you create dramatic studio lighting effects in Portrait mode,” reads the video’s description.

Apple says Portrait Lighting is based on “extensive research into the art and science of portraiture and core photographic lighting principles.” This mode takes advantage of the dual cameras, the Apple-designed image signal processor, the A11 Bionic chip and machine learning to recognize the scene, create a depth map and separate the subject from the background.

So it’s an ad which advocates stealing hats?

    • Toshke

plot twist: that shop is hers.

      • MadeInNY

Wow, I did not see that coming!

      • Steve Harold

Plot twist in the bloopers she gets arrested.

    • David Barud

      That is my understanding, yes

  • Oh wow, I had no idea it had Portrait Lighting video mode!!

    • Jeremy Spencer

I dont think it does have it:(

      • Steve Harold

        I wish it did!

      • GUY

As of now portrait works only with still images because that’s how much the hardware is capable of, for video portrait it needs to be waaaaaay more powerful to process the 60 fps of a typical HD video so in away this iPhone would need to be 60 times more powerful.

  • Steve Harold

Wish I could shoot video like that on 8 Plus. Apple ID literally showing a feature I don’t have. No portrait video.

  • Bill

Is it a boy or a girl?

    • Abraham Masri

Why does it matter? It’s 2017..

      • Bill

What does the year have to do with anything?

    • Steve Harold

By the looks it better be a girl.

    • GUY

Obviously a girl and you’re obviously immature.

      • Bill

I’m immature for not assuming one’s gender?

      • GUY

You’re immature for questioning one’s gender although clear as day.

      • Bill

It’s not clear as day, that’s the point. I am told to never assume gender. So I ask a question and still get flack. Am I only supposed to use non-binary terms and never question anything? I AM NOT SURE WHAT THE RULES ARE THESE DAYS, SO PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND. YOU PEOPLE KEEP MAKING THESE RIDICULOUS RULES AND THEN GIVING US CRAP FOR TRYING TO FOLLOW THEM.

      • Abraham Masri

No need for using caps, ok?
Also, using they/them is fine if you can’t tell someone’s gender

      • Bill

        Thanks for the advice, peacock.

      • GUY

        Boobs for fucks sake, BOOBS!

      • Bill

Oh? Boobs? That’s what makes someone a female? I bet a lot of people might disagree with that assumption, guy.

      • David Barud

Not necessarily advocating the nature of this conversation (more respectful ways to discuss this topic), but that is a good point.

  • Abraham Masri

The video has been removed for some reason..

    • GUY

Probably because it was misleading, it pushes you to believe that you can use the new portrait studio light in video… But you can’t, the camera is great but not that great.

  • Wilber Alexander Flores

When I use portrait lighting to get the black one I literally look like I’ve been cut out using Microsoft paint and pasted on a black background. It needs to get smarter.

  • Diego Milano

So they removed it for real? Wow. I got to watch it, but there’s something I just don’t like about it. Anyway… I can’t wait for iPhone X to be unleashed and watch its reviews, this 1-2 month delay to release a new product after being announced just feels so off…
